Al Strong is a musician and co-founder of The Art of Cool Project and jazz music festival that runs here in Durham, NC May 6-8. He’s an immense talent and has made a big impact on the music scene here.

With the recent release of his debut album “Love Strong: Volume 01,” and subsequent release show at Beyu Caffe, in Durham, he was featured in the January 13th issue of INDY Week.

I photographed Al for the INDY at Shadowbox Studio where we were able to work quickly and comfortably switching between a black and white background. It was a good shoot. We kept it casual and in fact Al said at one point he forgot he was being photographed as he just practiced a song he was going to perform later that night while I made photos of him. Near the end of the shoot my beloved Kallyn arrived and helped crack him up, which was great cause my terrible, terrible jokes only go so far.

I want to shout out to photographer Chris Charles, of Creative Silence, who made some great photos of Al for his album art and promo use. Their shoot was at the 21c Hotel. Check them out here.
