Tamil Nadu Government Orders 1,937 New Buses from Ashok Leyland to Upgrade Fleet
In a significant move to modernize public transport, the Tamil Nadu government has placed an order with Ashok Leyland for 1,937 new buses, aimed at enhancing both city and long-distance travel services.
Modern Features and Safety Upgrades
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Undertakings (TNSTU), which already operates over 21,000 Ashok Leyland buses across the state, confirmed that the new fleet will include buses designed for urban, town, and intercity routes.
According to the official press release, the buses will feature:
Upgraded engines and reinforced chassis for greater durability
Pneumatic suspension systems for smoother rides on long-distance routes
Electronic stability control to minimize accident risks
Automatic transmission and enhanced battery and power systems to support GPS tracking and passenger information services
Wheelchair ramps and low-floor designs to improve accessibility for differently-abled passengers
Industry Response
Speaking about the order, Madhavi Deshmukh, National Sales Head for Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles at Ashok Leyland, said,
