SHE FINISHED THE last drag of a cigarette and scraped off the ash on the bottom of her shoe, then flicked the butt into a trash can. Gold Dust Diner was a frequent hangout for Abril, and something about knowing she'd be back made her hesitant to litter on their sidewalk. As she entered the diner, the chime of the bell on the door alerted the waitstaff to her presence, and she got a familiar wave from the young lady behind the counter. Abi lifted a hand in a quick gesture, her equivalent of a friendly greeting, and took a seat at their usual booth. While she waited for Shep to arrive, she folded a napkin into a paper crane. Or, she imagined a paper crane as she crumpled the napkin in aimless directions until it resembled... a crumpled up napkin. She'd never learned anything about origami, and she'd never look it up; she thought if she tried it enough times, it would just come to her.
When her long-awaited guest finally arrived --he wasn't late as far as she was concerned, she was just excessively and habitually early-- she was on her second cup of coffee. She pushed the so-called paper crane across the table in front of him and offered a smile that dared him to call it anything less than a work of art.
"I made this for you."
