“UNITY"
by Charles McGee
Turning 95 this year, Charles McGee was born in Clemson to a family of South Carolina sharecroppers and says while helping his grandfather tend the land "he observed firsthand the order and harmony that exists within nature." Moving to Detroit at age 10 McGee developed an unwavering bond to the city. In 2008 he was awarded the first @TheKresgeFoundation Eminent Artist Award and told them "Detroit really has been a heaven for me. It has given me dignity and treated me with respect." In 2017 Detroit unveiled a new 13-story composition by McGee at Griswold and Clifford Streets saying "We are all connected." McGee's interweaving of dots, lines, and indeterminate shapes hide a variety of representational elements, reflecting Detroit's tale of "destruction and rebirth inextricably intertwined." @charles.mcgee_/
