Do you know what we should stop doing? Pressuring our youth.
Seriously. We hear about how one generation is ashamed/disappointed/upset with another. All the time. But you know what we need to do? Stop pressuring our kids.
Seriously. You. Right now. Stop expecting so much from them. You should have been able to experience life without those expectations too. I am sincerely apologetic for those who came before me who didn’t allow you the freedom to make decisions on your life without societal pressures.
My nibling came to me tonight and confided in me that they lost their scholarship because there were classes they dropped out of, classes they failed, that they were on academic probation. But they haven’t told their dad. Or my parents. (They live with my brother and parents) They have been worried about what would be thought about it, about the backlash.
You know what I told them? I looked them in the eyes and told them that it is okay. That they shouldn’t feel pressured to continue if they don’t want to or don’t feel comfortable doing so. I told them that if they need to take a year or two (or more) off that they should. Because it is their life, their future. They determine what happens. Not to give in to societal pressures.
College isn’t for everyone.
Let me say that again.
College isn’t for everyone.
I told them that I would fight their dad, I would fight my own parents, about this. Because in the end it isn’t about them it is about my sweet child. I’ve been fighting for them since they were born, I am well accustomed to it, I won’t stop now.
You know what? I was given a hug and a look that was so filled with gratitude as I was thanked...it was immeasurable.
That is when it hit me.
No one tells kids these days that they don’t have to do these things.
If you have a different route you want to go. Follow it. Do not let society lead you down a path you do not wish to follow. Be your own person. Live your life. Do not let others decide for you. Create your own path to happiness.
Deer can mess you up. They got hooves, they'll cut you.
