Did you know that the hand gesture used by Spock in the Star Trek movies comes from the Cohen sub-tribe of the Nation of Israel? Cohens are part of a Levite sub-tribe of the Jewish People
who hold a special priest status. Cohanim are also the direct descendants of Aharon (Moses’ older brother). This sacred hand gesture is ONLY used by Cohens and is how they traditionally bless the Nation of Israel during prayers before the Torah is taken out to be read. This symbol is also found on the gravestones of many Cohanim who have passed away to honor their identity and special status amongst the Nation. The original Spock actor, Leonard Nimoy, is a Jew and used his identity in a movie that greatly influenced pop culture. Although some Cohens have the last name “Cohen”, others changed their last name in order to minimize the constant experience of Jewish persecution in the diaspora. For them, the Cohen identity and traditions were orally passed down through the father. Today, there is actually a Cohen gene that has been found, which proves that all Cohens are the direct descendant of one man from the Levant region. Live Long & Prosper . ~ Rudy Rochman רודי רושמן
