The BMC ADO16 family was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis following the success of the Mini, featuring a BMC 1098cc A series engine mounted transversely and driving through the front wheels. The Mark I was produced in all forms between 1962-67 The Mark II introduced the a larger 1275cc version of the engine which was sold alongside the 1098cc engined cars. The Mark II appeared in Austin, Morris, Wolseley, MG, Vanden Plas and the Riley versions. With the introduction of the Mark II Riley dropped the Kestrel name, in July 1969 the Riley version of the ADO 16 was dropped, and brought an end to the Riley name. at the same time the Austin/Morris 1300 GT was announced. Like most other Triumphs of the period the Vitesse was designed by Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti which became available as a Saloon or Convertible and an Estate variant to special order. Originally introduce in May 1962 as an in-line 6-cylinder performance version of the Triumph Herald small saloon. powered by a 1596cc engine derived from the engine used in the Standard Vanguard Six In September 1966 Triumph upgraded the engine to 1998 cc, in line with the new Triumph GT6 coupé, and relaunched the car as the Vitesse 2-Litre, with an output of 95bhp Other detail modifications for the 2-litre, included a stronger clutch, all synchromesh gearbox, larger front brakes and wider wheels with the option of radial tyres alas the increased performance highlighted the deficiencies in the cars rear suspension The Vitesse Mark 2 was launched in October 1968 as the final update to the Vitesse range aimed at addressing the problem of the rear suspension the Mark 2 was fitted with a redesigned layout using new lower wishbones and Rotoflex half-shaft couplings along with the GT6 Mk.II. The engine was also tweaked further increasing output from 95bhp to 104bhp. The exterior featured a new grille with 3 sets of horizontal elements that were also used (in longer form) in the Herald 13/60, with the difference that the Herald maintained a single pair of headlights rather than adapting the twin headlight arrangement of the Vitesse, Rostyle wheel trims and silver painted steel rear panel, while the interior was also upgraded.
