Broke? Go Craigslisting!

OK, folks, here it is.  If you've been sleeping on the "free stuff" section on craigslist.com - WAKE UP!!!! Money is tight these days and that's exactly why craigslist should be your favorite place to shop.  You wouldn't believe the things you can get for FREE - but you have to be quick! 

Here are a few tips to get the most out of free craigslisting:

1. Download the craigslist app for your smartphone. Setup an alert for items that you are shopping for in the free section so you will be the first to know when they come available. 

2. Get a truck or a friend with a truck. If you are looking for larger items, it's always best if you have a truck at your disposal.  If you don't have a truck or a friend with a truck, Home Depot and Lowe's are great for short term rentals to pick up items.  Also, there are several people on craigslist that will pick up and deliver your items for a nominal fee.  Do a search for them.

3. Shop for friends.  Keep your homies in mind when you are shopping the free section on craigslist.  Maybe you don't need a particular item, but your friend does.  You could make their day.  Plus, it's FREE!

I have gotten quite a few items for free off craigslist to include several gallons of paint, 2 full size chairs for the den, and more.  Heck, I'm on craigslist right now browsing the free section to see what I can come up on.  Emails to owners sent!!

Cross Country Craigslisting

Check this out.  If you're really serious about craigslisting, you will expand your search to different markets.  True story.  A very good friend of mine in Dallas, TX - actually, the person who turned me on to craigslist  - has an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme he has been fixing on.  Anyone that has ever restored a classic knows that quality parts a great price is key.  He expanded his search to multiple markets including the one I live in - Atlanta.  Found the part he wanted BRAND NEW at half price of what it would have cost new.  Made contact with the seller and let him know that a friend would be by to pick it up.  So today, I drove up to pick up a Oldsmobile HEI Distributer. Tomorrow, dropping off a package at FedEx to be delivered to a very happy friend in Texas.

If you're looking for specialty items, broaden your search to areas you can drive to easily or where you have friends that can do a pick-up.  The savings on the price of an item can many times beat the cost of shipping.  As always, practice safety when picking up items.  Meet in public place when possible and/or take a friend.  Happy craigslisting!!

I "heart" Craigslist!

I LOVE Craigslist - notice ALL CAPS on the word "love"? I really do.  Ask my friends and family and they will tell you the same.  I'm a self-professed addict.  Not only that, I've gotten others hooked, too.  I'm strung out - I need intervention!! I was inspired to write this after a week-long craigslisting binge.  Look at this great stuff I got all in one week - saved $587 total:
