“PLAYS WITH A PURPOSE”
by Ears
“We’re not slick, we’re not refined and we don’t conform,” says Sydney, Australia New Theatre. “We’re a beacon for social movement; a hub for local enthusiasts. We’re driven by passion, not money.” Established in 1932 along with the slogan “Art Is A Weapon” New Theatre has fought countless social battles in the years following, and since 1994 has regularly partnered with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. 42 years after its 1973 relocation to King St in Sydney’s Newtown suburb the theater turned to Daniel O’Toole, aka Ears, to create this new work for its façade. Perhaps the most distinctive artist to emerge on the Australia urban art scene, Ears was constantly surrounded by music and painting growing up and showed an aptitude for drawing but his early training was in classical violin. Thankfully he has found some way to integrate senses of sight and sound through his stylized figures. @captainearwax/ @newtheatresydney/
