Bug of the Day

Found this walnut caterpillar in the driveway, it was not in great condition so I gave it its Glamour Shots session and let it go by a small walnut sapling in my yard. The next day, in the same driveway spot, there were at least 5 more of them. They probably all came from the same nearby walnut tree.

I raised a lot of butterflies and moths as a kid, and now I find that Caterpillar Smell™ evokes a very specific kind of nostalgia.

I probably wouldn't have found this aggregation of walnut caterpillars at all if I hadn't inhaled a sudden feeling of childlike wonder and affection for bugs as I passed by this tree. These caterpillars are normally social, but this is a lot of them!
