It's the retirement of a 'friend', says MAS CEO
SEPANG, June 15:
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) passenger carrier Boeing B737-400 retired today after 22 years of flying.
The airlines’ chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya in a speech after the flight’s landing, said that MAS’ Boeing B737-400 has had an excellent track record throughout its tenure.
“It has an exemplary track record and we did not lose any,” he said during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) last night.
“This is the retirement of a friend,” he added.
The MAS Boeing 737-400 fleet series was decommissioned yesterday to make way for the Boeing 737-800 series jets.
One aircraft in the fleet made its final journey to Kuala Lumpur from Penang, and landed at the KLIA at 9.31pm, greeted with a “retirement party” with the media in attendance.
The plane ferried 99 passengers on board.
Upon arrival, passengers were also greeted by MAS’ senior management team who presented them with special postcards to mark the occasion.
Ahmad Jauhari said that MAS’ fleet renewal programme had started three years ago.
“By the end of 2015, we will have 64 Boeing 737-800 planes,” he said, adding that currently MAS already has 56 planes from the new series in operations.
Since May 1992, MAS operated a total of 54 Boeing 737-400 aircrafts, making it the largest fleet outside of the United States at one point in time.
MAS used the 737-400 flights to operate domestic routes, including crossing from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah and Sarawak.
The aircraft has also flown to selected short-haul Southeast Asia destinations.
With this retirement, Ahmad Jauhari said it enables MAS to now have one of the “youngest” fleets in the world.
MAS currently has 151 aircrafts in its fleet, including the Airbus A380, A333s and B777, which are used for long-haul routes.
It also has the new ATR72-600 series turbo-props.
