Name: Denglong, Wàngtiānhǒu, Cháotiānhǒu, Hǒu

Type: Mythical

Culture of Origin: China

Description: Said to have ten characteristics: horns of a deer, head of a camel, ears of a cat, eyes of a shrimp, mouth of a donkey, hair of a lion, neck of a snake, belly of a Shen*, scales of a koi, front claws of an eagle, and the back paws of a tiger.

Myth: In the reign of the Kangxi Emperor, a Denglong was seen fighting two dragons and three Jiaolong*. It managed to slay two of the Jiaolong and one of the dragons, before being killed itself.

Facts:

The Denglong is said to be the son of the Dragon King.

It is said to be a guardian.

It eats the brains of dragons, and breathes fire to defeat dragons.

Denglong often assist kings and emperors.

*The Shen is a mythical creature said to be either a clam monster or a type of dragon. Jiaolong are a type of dragon, though exactly what they are varies from hornless to female to sea monsters.
