I've been doing a bunch of it, and I'm still confused and uncomfortable with it

I think part of it is that my experience of mental illness is very different from the way it's been described in fiction. It's like the kind of thing that happens in fiction if a character is brought back from the dead and immediately starts getting into pointless, pointless arguments and scuffles, except if it happened in real life it'd be a lot more like this.

The way it happened in fiction was more like "the protagonist is a sociopath, he has hallucinations, delusions and is a jaded cynic. He has a very complicated relationship with Jesus and is absolutely terrified of Hell." And I'm like, no, you aren't. You have hallucinations. You do have delusions. You are a complex human who is also terrified of Hell. This all makes for a good character trope but that is pretty much not how I experience mental illness
