Their Dance Skills Defy Gravity
I found this video simply by searching “hip hop dance” on Youtube.com and scrolling down to find a video that didn’t apparently feature a choreographed dance routine. The video appears to feature a group of friends engaging in social dance together for a piece of social media content. From reading the video’s description, I gathered that the post was made by a content creator by the name of DrewDanceKing, who I believe to be the first dancer in the video, based on his profile picture. I verified through a separate search that the video’s title “Roddy Ricch - The Box” refers to the hip hop artist and song which the dancers dance to in the video. After reviewing the official video for “The Box,” it’s apparent that dance moves performed by DrewDanceKing and his friends were not taken from the Roddy Ricch video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNZqm3dxd2w. During the performance by DrewDanceKing and his friends, individual dancers will take center stage to engage in freestyle dance, but at times, multiple dancers will perform the same, or similar moves. This demonstrates Camille Brown’s description of African American social dance, in her video, “A History of African American Social Dance,” as something which “has steps that everyone can agree on, but [is] about the individual and their creative identity.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpCBMwAweDI.
