how do you feel about the minffel hugs?? They’re some of my favorite moments in the entire podcast. 1. When he comes back from the USS horrible unending nightmare and 2. When he gets back from his meeting with the Dear Listeners
OHHHH I THINK ABOUT THESE SO OFTEN
eiffel and minkowski’s hugs make up two thirds of every canon hug in the podcast. the only other time positive physical contact occurs is when lovelace hugs eiffel shortly after his breakthrough from the neuro inhibitor (unless you count fourier and lambert’s hug that took place in change of mind). both of these are so meaningful in their own way so i’m gonna talk about them separately because. my god. the parallels.
the first time eiffel and minkowski hugged. broke me. it was the first physical display of affection used in the entire show, and involving minkowski. renée is very clearly not an affectionate person, and it’s made obvious through the awkwardness involved after she lets go. that hug was one hundred percent a spur of the moment, impulsive, heart-driven decision. she thought he was dead, and she personally blamed herself for his death, and so when she finally sees him again without the intrusion of other eyes that expect her to be the strong, stoic commander that she often needed to be, she doesn’t know what else to do. she grabs him, pulls him in, and she cries. both minkowski and eiffel are notorious for failing to communicate their feelings verbally, and so this is her way of telling him i missed you. life without you here was awful for everyone and when i realized i may never see you again it broke me. it’s an extremely emotionally vulnerable moment for her, perhaps the most vulnerable she lets herself be for the rest of the podcast.
now the second one. the second one is so much worse. hugging is something that seems like something much more natural to eiffel. he’s never been shy about his opinions of people, positive or negative, and now that he knows minkowski considers them close enough to hug, hugging her is the first thing he does once he sees her again. he’s the one who initiates the hug, and he’s under the assumption that it’ll be a sweet, emotional reunion just like last time. she’s the first voice he hears, and the first face he sees once he gets back, and he’s completely put at ease. he feels safe with her. but this time, minkowski doesn’t hug back. not because she doesn’t want to, but because it isn’t her. eiffel is most likely too relieved just to be back to think too much of it, but it’s revealed by jacobi that the crew is at least semi conscious of their actions while being controlled by pryce, so even though minkowski would be happy he’s home, and would love nothing more than to hug him, in that moment she’s probably screaming for him to get out, to do anything else. the last embrace they share, the last real moment of intimacy between the two, is soiled, and minkowski will never be able to make it up to him because eiffel isn’t eiffel after the finale anymore, either.
