Exercise 5.4: Text and image (Final artwork) Part III

Big & Small

Big & Small (Watercolour paper & Guoache) 

This is nice artwork, I love the way they look. I think they are fun and happy illustrations. I do not think Big can be used as a font, unless they are created as a word with the idea so you can make small changes to move it more readable but I still think small can be created as a font in black and white.

Fat & Thin

Fat (marker on A4 heavy cardboard)

Thin (wacom and printer on A4 printer paper)

I like both of the fonts, I am not crazy about them but they are fine and I think they can be used to create words. I think Fat need more work with pencil but create a more 3D shape. Thin was done on Photoshop with brush and I like the effect.

Fast & slow

I wanted to capture the idea of movement on liquids but the truth is that I did not like the final result of fast, I think there is a better representation of that idea. Slow was OK. As a font, I think both of them are easy to create as individual letters but I think that work better as calligraphy.

Calm & Mad

I love the decoration, the texture of these two fonts.. I think they are great for a title, a decoration. I love them. I work with different colours for the different context base on the sea. I think red for mad is a bit cliche so I chose the other idea.

Boring& Fun

This was the easiest but also the lest create of the all the fonts. Of course, they were made base on other fonts with a different process on the software.

Exercise 5.4: Text and image (Mood boards for each of the pair words) Part II

Big & small: I look into small and big animals. I want it to be fun. I will keep the green and blue for the letters and add some animals to the fonts. I thought about participial and planets for small and big but I feel more inclined to work with children and fun idea. 

Bellow is the notes I made when I was working with the idea. These two fonts are kind of contrasting. I thought about capital letters only for big and lower cases for small.

I am going to work with gouache 

  Fat & Thin: The clearest association with Fat & Thin is the diet, stigmatization, phrases like “skin as bones” so I work with that idea and I created a mood board (with people) but I realize that was borderline between acceptable to cruel (I could not put my finger on what was wrong but it feels wrong probably is), so I went back to the same idea but I more to a more abstract concept, and I tried to create a concept base on the texture of body fat and bones... 

I will be using Wacom and photoshop

Fast & Slow: Fast was easy to get an idea, fast cars, running people. This fast movement pictures are very visual, lines moving more than objects. Slow it is another story, it is a more relative term, I found the picture of honey that it is sticky and you can imagine it is slow... I think it is a better reference the picture of people in the middle of a crow running because it helps you to reference without words.

I did not know how to create texture without using Photoshop... So this is the experiments I did... none of which were successful. 

Another test, I decided on the second one but with a different media... I used market for this one but I decided to use acrylic.

This is an A4 page, I started to work with acrylic but it does not work well, it has too much density and this creates a texture that I did not like it. 

Calm & Mad: I used the sea as a way to transmit those feelings. I think the mood board can clearly communicate those. No only the difference of colour, one light blue and the other grey and dark brown but the shape of the water.

Boring & Fun: I used the idea of party, laughs and colourful idea. Interesting enough, most of the pictures with these characteristics were girls so I think that help with the mood board. Boring was at the begging on blue and newspaper type so when I was looking for people I started looking for people with ties (because I associated with business newspaper, boring to me), the colour is black. grey and blue, similarity and men are other characteristics that I was not looking for but I think it helps with the mood board.

Exercise 5.4: Text and image (handwriting & Software alteration) Part I

Handwriting

The images above are the handwriting on a Wacom. I used different brushes and colour to exemplified the quality of the words. I also added some movement and direction to add more elements to the fonts.

I think all the ideas behind the letters are pretty obvious like red for mad and fast (Ferraris) 

Software

Big-Small

I wanted to used round borders and a fanny colour that make it to jump out. The small was also at the corner because I did not want to add another variable. Of course the size of the letters (individually and the word) I think the contrast on the size is important to make them look smaller and bigger.

Fat and Thin

Orientation is the first thing I did. I wanted the idea of Long and thin and shorter and fat... I think this idea works well, a different from the colour, I like it at the beginning but know I think I could have chosen something better. 

Fast & Slow

1,2&3 (direction) I was only going to used wind distortion on Photoshop so to give some idea of wind and direction, movement... I think it works better for fast rather than slow... I am not so sure if it is only the direction, but also the colour that does not work well. 

Fun & Boring

1. Ornament: I wanted to find a fond that has some adornment. This is the first one and I added the different colour that I think is very fitting. Boring was a more easy task. I went for blue (I thought black but I think this blue is boring) The type of fond remand me to the Times or a serious newspaper... 

Calm & Mad

Calm: I tried to find a handwritten fond and I used a light colour baby blue. I also created like a wave of the sea so it was more associated with the concept of calm.

MAD: I used capital letters because it represents scream. Red for the concept of anger.
