I feel like this changes everything, I'm just not sure how. This is quite a revelation to just drop on us, Glass. Expect several hundred sound-related questions in the coming weeks.
It's not the kind of information that could easily be related in the comic. It's simply the way Kasslynians work and a mechanic of this setting. It doesn’t have much to do with the story other than as the explanation for why Duane can hear, and to reinforce the importance of Sound to the khert and to this universe. I mean, the khert itself can Hear - that’s how a typical wright relates pymary to it - so of course its little ethereal ghost spawn, its little Kasslynian soul children, should be able to hear as a natural side effect of their existence.
It’s very poetic, I think, this idea of the mechanic of Hearing as an intrinsic spiritual ability. It lends additional horror to the deafening Hells of the black Ocean. Kasslynians must experience music and melody in a way much more profound than we do. Their soul quite literally resonates to sounds.
Anyway, when we get to the Dammakhert later on, I’ll use this idea to explain some of the mechanics of how that works.
