Bridal Affair. The Forbes equivalent for blushing brides that want that dream wedding. The latest trends, dream venues, bouquets, to-dos and what not-to-dos. It has everything a woman could ever ask for. Well, not for this woman. A woman who had just thrown that glossy magazine in the trash. “Hey! I was reading that, Harumi!” Vania said, folding her arms. “You have a problem.” “What’s wrong with it? You know I'm subscribed to Bridal Affair… It's a monthly thing.” Vania stood up from the couch and grabbed the discarded magazine, wiping away the dust. She gasped as Harumi swiped it away again. “Minimalist decor, printed invites, affordable venues?! Are you sure this is Bridal Affair?” “Yes! What’s the problem?!” “I’m not buying it, Blondie.” Harumi spat. Her head was killing her, and Vania was going to be the main culprit if she ended up with an aneurysm. “You like vintage chic, golds and baby blues, having a calligrapher at your wedding, designer wedding gowns—And you're reading this?” Harumi could almost laugh. Until she looked closer. The glossy front cover slowly slid off of the thin pages, fluttering to the floor. Harumi gasped aloud. She gave the blonde a look as if she killed someone. It wasn't even Bridal Affair! Vania squeaked in surprise then tried to grab it back. The two girls were suddenly engaged in a tug of war. Manicured nails gripped the glossy book for dear life, pulling and tugging until one of them budged. “See! This isn't even the right mag!” Harumi hissed, pulling the glossy booklet tight. "Is it even yours?" “it is mine! I bought it!” “Oh really, Vee?! With what?!” “With… A… CARD!” Just as Vania screamed, pulling the magazine harder, Harumi smirked and suddenly unclenched her hands. “Argh!” A mass of blonde and blue sprawled across the varnished wooden floor. The magazine landed squarely on Vania’s face. “Now you're lying to me? Who in this world buys a cheap ass magazine with a card like yours?” Harumi knelt down beside her. She tucked her knees under her chin, her eyes now softening at the state of her friend. “... Is it him?” she asked after a while of pondering. Truth be told, Harumi had never met Zane at any gala or function the Ashmonger family held. The name never floated in their circles, and even her personal assistant couldn’t find any dirt. Was he only invited to Vangelis’ private parties? She could only guess. Dr. Julien was a well known doctor and inventor, but Vania’s engagement was the first time Harumi had even heard he had a son. So, she couldn't gauge Zane’s personality.
He was elusive… Her asking this of Vania, if her fiance was really the root of her friend’s weirdness, was slightly a shot in the dark. However, she couldn't discount it. Vania was silent for a while. She bit her lip and nodded silently. Harumi was right. She did have a problem, and that problem was her fiancé. About a month ago, at the French country home her father had bought for them, Vania accidentally overheard Zane on the landline talking about their wedding. Not “bad” things, but things she wished she did not hear ever in her life. She didn't know what to do about it, so she buried it deep in her heart. What are you supposed to do when the person you are supposed to marry doesn't even love you? Oh. Maybe that is a bad thing… “What?!” Harumi gasped quietly. Her voice turned into a whisper, “why didn't you tell me this before?! Vania, that is insane!” The blonde curled into a ball on the floor, facing away from her friend. That phone call has been mulling over her head. She had done everything so perfectly; wearing his colors, having brunch with Dr. Julien every other day, even arranging Zane’s social calendar for the next few months! Vania even held a charity gala in honor of his hospital… She did all of that just for a fiance who will never love her. “He’s calling off the engagement soon…” she spoke softly. Vania sat up slowly, her eyes never meeting Harumi’s, “I’m sure of it,” “Well, some marriages aren't for love, y'know,” Harumi said after a bit of hesitation. Her tone was awkward, stripped of her usual haughtiness and audacity. “Like mine?” “Vania, do you even love the guy?” The question fell on her like a ton of bricks. A bullet to her gilded cage. Does she even love him? The feeling was like a cold, heavy waterfall crashing onto her head. It was becoming harder to breathe.
Does it even matter? “Vania, you know—” “I can’t let him do it, Harumi.” She snapped. Finally, she faced Harumi. Violet eyes met crazed blue ones. “I can’t let him call it off,” Vania breathed shakily. “I will do anything to stop him from ending our engagement.” Her hands went cold. Harumi tried to open her mouth to speak, to shake her out of her thoughts, to slap her. Vania didn't sound like herself, and it was terrifying… “...My life is on the line.” All Vania could think of is her father’s disappointment.
