On jobs and salaries

It makes me sad that we live in a society where success is measured by how much you earn every month -- because really, each of us have our own calling, our own passion, our own talents, our own skills to bring to the table. We can't all have the same job, we have a role to play. I've been told that it was ridiculous to take on a job that paid me less than my old job, to choose a job that doesn't require me to be in the office 24/7 and yet not have job security. Well, maybe for some, it doesn't make sense. Maybe for some, this is a sign of weakness & of being lost.

But you know what--I don't think I am lost. Okay--maybe it’s because of my circumstance: I’m single & I have my parents’ support. But I very well know where I'm headed and my goals have been my guiding star. We all have to start somewhere and it isn't necessarily a linear path. For some it could be a steep climb, for some it could be a steady journey. Maybe others don't see where I'm headed or what path I'm taking, but it's crystal clear for me. I've set my GPS and I'm on my way. I don't think I'm poor. I may be earning less, but don't think I was ever shortchanged when it comes to the wealth of learning and experience. I may have issues with money once in a while, but I get by with some sacrifices. I'm not trying to justify my choices or put down people who have chosen the "usual" roads to their career. I'm not saying that people in the corporate ladder are to be looked down upon for not chasing their dreams and their passions, because maybe they really are doing it already. What I'm saying is this: It's all about perspective. While there may be universal concepts of success and achievement, how we achieve and measure it can vary. To me, at the end of the day, your paycheck means nothing if you don't contribute to the greater good. And of course, following your passion is useless if it won't put food on the table. There should always be a balance. Let's not be quick at judging others for we don't all have the same temperaments, opportunities, skills and passions. To each his own.
