Currently working on a home exam and I was wondering if anyone has a citable source for this? Can look it up myself but I am currently under a great deal of time pressure. So was GB the first to legalize unions in 1871?

She paints a star, big and black, around one blue eye and winks at herself in the mirror.

"You look ridiculous," a familiar voice calls, laughing, from the doorway. She reels around at the sound-- too quick to be graceful; too smooth to be comedic.

"Well, Val, baby," she grins, opening her arms wide for a flourish, "isn't that the name of the game? All eyes on me..." there's a gleam in her eye-- both eyes, if we're being technical-- so big that, when combined with the lilt in her voice, she needn't bother to elbow the aerialist in the ribs. Still, Twist steps close enough so that she can do it anyway. For "further encouragement."

"I'm not going to say it."

"C'mon."

"No."

"Please?"

"Nope. That face doesn't work on anyone except Seb."

(She makes a mental bet with herself. If it takes longer than twenty seconds, she'll get Seb a Christmas present. No take-backs. No face-squirting flowers or spring-snakes involved. No crosses.)

(It only takes fifteen.)

"On the center of the ring--"

Beautiful--

"Just like a circus." and right on cue. Wonderful unison they have going, almost as if one of them had planned it from the beginning. Absolutely mesmerizing.

Twist's laughing, eyes glinting in the dim light as she finishes the zip on her so-called "fly suit." Val's rolling her eyes, flipping her dark hair, the corner of her moth turned up just so (again: beautiful, or so Junior things, but anyone'd be lucky to hear it from her).

"At least the makeup matches the clown," Val says, smoothing down a few cotton-candy-colored fly-aways. 

"Yeah, yeah. Are you gonna give me a good luck kiss or what?"

It's quick-- short and sweet and a little bit pursed at the edges. Anxiety, probably, like always. Just like all the rest of them, snuck in before the act like a little totem, a just-in-case to squeeze in some spare space beneath the costume.

"Be careful," Val mutters as they're pulling apart, still sharing a breath.

"Aren't I always?"
