Vee's Archaeology Update Pt. 2 - Arrowheads
What is Archaeology without finding arrowheads? Arrowheads are very common objects found via doing archaeological digs just about anywhere. While able to be found plenty out in nature, there will be certain structures later that allow you to obtain quite a few of them, including being added to the common loot table for Trail Ruins.
Arrowheads can, of course, be used to craft Arrows. While the classic crafting table recipe of using 1 Flint, 1 Stick, and 1 Feather to craft 4 arrows will remain (alongside the Skeleton's ability to drop them), you will have a new and improved ability to craft upgraded arrows via... the Fletching Table.
THAT'S RIGHT! IT'S TIME! The Fletching Table will have a fairly similar interface to the Smithing Table, having 3 input slots and 1 output slot. Placing 1 Flint, 1 Stick, and 1 Feather in will allow you to craft 8 arrows instead of the crafting table's 4. A real bang for your buck! However, placing an old Arrowhead you've dug up instead of the random Flint will give you 8 of a new item called Fletched Arrows.
Fletched Arrows, unlike regular arrows, fly straight and true. While regular arrows have a random offset when fired so they never hit the same place every time, Fletched Arrows made with Arrowheads have no such drawback.
The Fletching Table also has another use - to modify Arrowheads. By placing an Arrowhead, a piece of Flint (for extra materials), and another material, you can craft a number of different types of Arrowheads that can then be fletched with a stick and feather to make 8 of those kinds of Arrows. They are as follows:
Fletched Arrows (regular Arrowhead) - as stated above, have no random offset like other arrows.
Heavy Arrowhead (Obsidian) - does not fly as far as other arrows, falling to the ground quickly. However, they deal heavy damage, especially as they fall downward and gain speed. If you're high up above an enemy, drop a Heavy Arrow down on them!
Slender Arrowhead (Breeze Rod) - almost the opposite of the Heavy Arrow, the Slender Arrow flies very fast and far, able to hit quite far away without falling to the ground. However, its random offset is quite higher than the average arrow, and its damage is slightly less. Good for slightly pinging a far away target or getting the Sniper Duel advancement!
Curved Arrowhead (Nether Quartz) - the arrow will curve around like a boomerang. If you're skilled enough with this trick arrow, you could hit an enemy from behind! The curve will be wider the higher the velocity, so it'll turn around quicker the less you draw back your bow.
Jagged Arrowhead (Prismarine Shard) - Jagged Arrows can break through and disable shields, similar to axes. If the target is not holding up a shield, it will instead ignore 2 points of armor. If they are holding a shield, it does not. Has its best uses in PvP!
Bouncy Arrowhead (Slimeball) - Bouncy Arrows can ricochet off of blocks and mobs for a maximum of 3 times before sticking into their target. Great for crowd control in close quarters like caves, and can potentially let you re-use arrows if they stick into a wall after hitting a mob!
Spectral Arrowhead (Glowstone Dust) - makes the existing Spectral Arrows. Can be found via archaeology on Suspicious Soul Sand in the Nether.
Arrowhead of [Effect] aka the Tipped Arrowhead (Splash Potion) - makes the existing Tipped Arrows. Changed from a lingering potion to a splash potion to make them available slightly earlier. Luckily with this new fletching system, you still get 8!
These Arrows can range from fun novelties to play with to a new way to spice up combat or PvP. Which I think makes them a good fit for Archaeology - making things something the player would want while still making fun little toys for the player to enjoy!
While being tied to Archaeology still renders these unique arrows non-renewable, they still have their uses, and they will be common enough that the player won't have to worry about running out, but they'll still want be incentivized to excavate and do archaeology both in the wild and in structures again and again. Maybe I can add a renewable way to obtain or duplicate them in the future of this project? Oh well, for now I'm happy keeping them unique to Archaeology!
