I know I’ve been posting the Flaming Torch Bromeliad a lot but they are REALLY pretty today :-) (billbergia pyramidalis), known as the flaming torch and foolproof plant, it’s a species of bromeliad that is native to northern South America and parts of the Caribbean. Found in moist, humus rich, soils or in composted leaf mould on the ground, in humid areas, as well as on rocks under shady forest trees. If you can find an area like this you will be rewarded every year with a wonderful show of flowers. Aechmea weilbachii is a type of bromeliad and is sometimes known as an urn plant because of the way it stores water in the centre of the leaves. This species comes from eastern Brazil, from the States of Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. It is an epiphytie which flowers in late autumn, winter and early spring. It’s flowers last for quite a while, the flowers are followed by lilac-red fruit. It goes well in the right sort of pot or in a bed full of rough organic material and it clumps up fairly well. It’s currently sharing a pot with an abutilon and both seem to be doing quite well. Every few years pull all the plants out and remove old dead bits then divide them and just put them lightly into the ground supporting each other. They are found in moist humus rich soils or in composted leaf mould on the ground in humid areas, and as well as on rocks under shady forest trees. If you can find an area like this you will be rewarded every year with a wonderful show of flowers.
