Hello!! I'm currently learning Finnish in hopes of moving there with my (native) girlfriend in the future and while I grasped some basics thanks to Duolingo, I would like to get better at spoken finnish so I don't sound like a complete weirdo by using written language to speak to someone 😭 (I would also really appreciate if you or any of your followers here know of a Finnish movie/shows streaming website with subtitles preferably)
Moi ja tervetuloa Suomeen!
I think you will grasp spoken Finnish as you get exposed to it. There isn't one standard spoken Finnish, so how people talk in real life depends on where they live. For example, most people saying they teach spoken Finnish will tell you minä becomes mä, but that's not universal. From where I'm from, we say mie and that's really common in a lot of Finnish dialects.
I don't think anyone will think you're a weirdo for speaking written Finnish. People can tell you're still learning.
I think it's more important for you to make sure you don't switch to English out of convenience. Been there, done that. Don't do it! It fucks up your language learning in the long run. I mean, there are people who have lived in Finland for years and still can't speak Finnish. It's not a Finland-specific problem, this happens in a lot of countries. Anyway, written Finnish is not your enemy, English is. People wanting to be nice to you will switch to English and sabotage your language learning without meaning to. Resist! Lie that you don't speak English if you have to. It's better they change to speaking written Finnish instead of English. Tsemppiä!
I think Netflix should have some Finnish Nordic noir at least. And some programs on Yle Areena can be viewed outside of Finland for free. Katsomo and Ruutu might have something as well. There's also HBO Max and Viaplay.
Would any of my followers have other recommendations for things to watch?
