Finding A Lead
A brief oneshot story for the Hacker!Jack / Hacksepticeye character known as “The Eye”
The Eye sat in his usual position: alone in a darkened hotel room, hunched over his computer with his eyes narrowed on the screen. Skilled fingers danced across the keys and a pencil was tucked between the hacker’s lips, his teeth playing against the coated wood as he worked.
Until today, he hadn’t had a breakthrough in his search for Henrik or Anti in weeks, not since whispers of the word “Doctor” had been fluttering across the Internet like wisps of smoke. He’d followed that lead down to its core and found nothing. It had been related, yes, and he’s told Chase Brody as much, but it hadn’t brought him any closer to finding what he was really looking for.
This entire case was infuriating. Never had The Eye had this much trouble in a job before, never. It was both a frustrating, unsolvable puzzle, and a tantalizing challenge. But today...today something strange had happened. Today Chase had come to him with something odd. A postcard. A bloodied postcard that said nothing but “Wish You Were Here” with no return address or bonus message. Nothing to indicate where or who it had come from...except that Chase said he was certain it was from Henrik because it had shown up, address to him, at the house they all lived in. “All” being the other...Egos? The Eye never really understood that. But whatever.
Anyway, the postcard had arrived a week or two prior, but Chase had only recently found it because somebody named “Marvin” had forgotten to tell him he’d received it at all. So now, The Eye was trying to digitally track down where the hell it could have come from...
A ding sounded on his computer, and his fingers stilled above the keyboard. What...? He clicked over to the program he’d had running in the background, one that was on a constant lookout for any and all images of Henrik’s face, especially if they showed up in the background of somebody else’s photos. But...no...the image he was looking at was NOT somebody else’s. The photo was clearly taken of the Good Doctor specifically, and it seemed like he himself had posted it on Instagram. Or rather, it was on Jack’s instagram. Jack, the friend who Henrik had saved. A zoomed, cropped photo of half of the Good Doctor’s face...and the caption?
“Vacation’s over!”
The hacker picked up his burner phone and dialed the number he’d memorized in the months that he had been searching for both Henrik and Anti. It was a few minutes before the person on the other end picked up.
“Chase?” he murmured without any sort of preamble. “It’s Zander. I’ve got something. Meet me here. Yeah, same place. I need you to look at this...you know him better than I do.”
Something about this was very, very wrong. And yet...The Eye grinned as he hung up the phone...this meant he had a lead.
