I just want to emphasize something...
I am PRO redemption arc for Hap. I find him to be a complex and complicated character, and even though he does bad things, I believe he's trying to do good. He just has a perverted view of goodness (plus he's a coward) (plus hubris is his downfall). I am 100% AGAINST shipping Hap with Prairie. Omg. No. Just no. Shipping an abuser with their captive is not something I support at all.
Hap's second chance
When you use the 5 movements to travel, you can get amnesia. I like the idea of Hap getting amnesia & gaining a second chance to do right by the others. I believe he has the potential for a good heart, but maybe he either made bad choices or just grew up in a bad environment. (Thinking of the Syfy show Dark Matter here & how those hardened criminals turned their lives around & became forces of good.) Think of Steve. He was pretty horrible, until The OA gave him a second chance. I would love for Hap to experience that kind of grace. Can you imagine how cool of a character he could be if he was forgiven by & reconciled to the others? Can you even imagine how great that redemption arc would be?!
Hunter Hap
I mentioned in a previous post that I would like to see a redemption arc for Hap. I want to offer a clarification + an amendment:
Clarification: I was thinking of a very specific scenario, where Hap would lose all memory of who he was and what he’d done. Have you seen the SyFy show Dark Matter? Bc that kind of a scenario is what I’m talking about. The criminals on that ship were HORRIBLE people, but the show begins with them waking up with no memory of their past. Clean slate. And they make different choices and become these AMAZING heroes who will end up saving the galaxy.
When you compare Hap to his mentor, you can see Hap has a few positive character traits: he believes in something bigger than himself, he hungers for truth, he is humble. His mentor is vengeful and egotistical and petty. I don’t see redeemable character in his mentor, but in Hap?? I see the potential for good given the right circumstances. Unfortunately, he’s already done such horrible awful things, I think it would take something drastic, like a mind wipe, for him to have any chance at redemption.
On that note…
Amendment: I rewatched The OA since my last post & I forgot about the absolutely horrible things Hap did at the end of the show. So no. I’m not rooting for Hap to have a redemption arc. I changed my mind.
