my take on the hanahaki disease
hanahaki is a rare sickness , conceived when a person falls in love, but their love is not reciprocated. however, the disease does not always occur- it tends to spread subtly, and it is not always noticable.
the seeds of the flower are moreso like spores, and are hardly able to be seen. they can be transferred between people very quickly, usually inhaled into the lungs, but very rarely can they be directly injected into the bloodstream via injury, etc.
seeds will then plant themselves near the heart until the right conditions.
the conditions for the seeds to sprout occur when the person falls in love, and that’s usually when they take root. if the feelings aren’t reciprocated by the interest, the roots will then surround the heart. this stage is usually passed off as ‘the feeling of heartbreak’, and the person might not even notice theyre a victim of the disease.
the longer they let themselves be consumed by the disease, the more the plant will grow. soon, the roots and vines surround both the heart and the lungs, making it harder to breathe- this stage is more noticeable. still, the person may be too caught up in their feelings to think about it.
before they know it, the effects are almost irreversible. since the flowers have grown inside the lungs, the victim will conceive a terrible cough, their every breath filled with petals. it’s almost too late, this stage is the most fatal- anything after this will surely kill them. the only way to save them now would be for their interest to love them back… or surgery. a surgical removal of the plant is scary, but it’s a trusted way to get rid of the flowers- however, it also will remove the love for the interest entirely.
if you ever fear that you may have a hanahaki seed inside of you, consult your local hospital. better safe than sorry.
