The last tip is for all you hard working machinists out there...remember to to take a break every now and then. Second last tip for this week...again, thanks for those #IMTS2016 pics! Just because a part is round or the stock is round, does not mean that you go straight to the #lathe. Lathes have their place, but mills can be more efficient and are sometimes the better choice. This part was done on the #mill, which allowed me to use less material (part off blades take at least 100 thou, plus you need something for the chuck to grip onto, plus you want a. It of clearance). For the second operation (which cuts the side you see with the engraving), I held the part by the OD in softjaws with light clamping pressure so that I didn't marr the OD, which was finished in the first operation. In a lathe, the workpiece is spinning, so you don't have the luxury of keeping chucking pressure low (otherwise the part could fly out). (at Karve Machine Inc.)
