It was a general mantra for Memphis to not usually think too hard about the choices she made in her life, and tonight was no exception. As she pulled up to Landon’s apartment building, she didn’t even waste much time glancing up at the foreboding structure before hurrying inside, ducking her head against the misty rain that had just begun falling from the sky. She kept her mind occupied on the elevator ride up by scrolling through her social media feeds; and then, she was in front of his door. Now was the first time that the brunette hesitated, her knuckles poised against the door. She pressed her lips together tightly, then let out a tense breath, lightly knocking.

Memphis smirked down at her phone again as she climbed out of the cab, then glanced up at the bar that she knew all too well. She tossed the driver a twenty, then checked her makeup quickly in the side mirror before the cab drove off, leaving Memphis on the street. She slipped into the bar, which was fairly busy, though that was to be expected on a Friday night. She tucked her hair behind her ear, standing on her tiptoes to see over the crowd of people gathered around the bar at the front. She managed to slip between two guys -- who didn’t seem to mind it at all -- and then she spotted what she was looking for. “Oh, bartender.” She called out, holding up a finger, a teasing glint in her eyes as she waited for Miguel to notice her.

Not for the first time that day, Memphis had to take a moment to ask herself why she was putting herself through this shit yet again. She had never known that a mahogany door could be so imposing, until she was standing in front of the one that led into her childhood home. She heaved a sigh and her eyes traveled downward, to the cement porch beneath her heeled booties. The porch she had woken up on after a drunken night, looking up into the disappointed faces of her parents as they told her that was the last straw. She could physically feel their shame, and deep down in her gut, that feeling had never gone away.
The brunette sighed again, shaking her hair out of her face as she turned her back to the front door and pulled out her compact, meeting her own eyes in the small mirror, but only briefly. Stuffing a hand into her coat pocket, she pulled out a tube of lipstick, then expertly swiped the electric red paint onto her mouth. Her parents would hate it, of course. But her sister would probably hate it even more.
Wrapping her scarf around her neck a bit tighter, Memphis turned back to the door and wished for this to go by as fast as possible. She reached for the door handle, turned it in her hand, then stepped into the Hart household.
