i’m planning to be a cosc major. is there anything you can recommend me do before college?
Oh yeah sure here’s a few things, they might sound a little basic but it’s helped me out when I was in freshman year:
-Stay updated with your studies, don’t fall behind.I made it a habit of skipping classes here and there and I fell behind DRASTICALLY to the point where I couldn’t turn in one part of a really big project. In computer science, all of the little shit matters. So missing one part of information might hurt you in the long run.
- Practice, practice, practiceThere are a few websites out there that will help you practice coding and things of the sort (not sure if I can link them since I’m on mobile but: “CodeAcademy, Treehouse, and bento.io”) keep on typing so that the information stays in you’re head. It’s a lot of info.
- GO TO YOUR LABSOmfg the labs are most important to me. You do hands on coding and can get hands on help with things you’re struggling with. Go there
- If you are assigned a book and can afford to buy it (whether it be an ebook or hard copy) GET IT. Learning from the book in my opinion is easier than just following the teachers slides, they don’t always put everything on the slides.
-If your anxiety lets you, find a partnerPartners are the best in computer science so you don’t feel alone in this struggle of a major lmao.
-Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questionsI always felt afraid to ask questions because I thought everybody else knew the material and I would be slowing the class down that way but it’s actually hurt me along the way because since I wasn’t able to ask the question I fell behind. It’s a bad feeling
I hope these made sense and helped you out buddy 🎉👏🏿
