One-shot/ drabble request: Kitcup cuddling with Astrid and to his embarrassment purring.
Based off of this post which stemmed from this magic!anon
Astrid sat on a picnic blanket on their favorite sea stack, watching as a certain Night Fury and his rider flew over from Berk. Stormfly squawked a greeting as they landed, bobbing her head which Toothless returned with gusto.
Hiccup dismounted with a heavy sigh. She could tell from his posture that it had been a busy day for the Chief of Berk.
Her eyes moved to the auburn cat ears that rested on his head, then to the auburn tail that swayed with each step behind him. A magical prank that was still in effect a week later. Most of Berk had gotten used to it...except Hiccup.
"Afternoon, Milady," he greeted with a warm smile, his cat whiskers lifting on his cheeks as he settled in beside her. "Sorry we were late, the twins held me up for a while..."
"Yeah," his shoulders lowered as he nodded, running a hand over his face. His scruff had grown out some, since he had trouble shaving around the whiskers, giving him a slightly rugged look. He laid down on the blanket, propped up on his elbow, "At least with you I'm just Hiccup. Not Chief, not Dragon Master. Just Hiccup."
She hummed in agreement, lowering herself as well to face him. Her fingers ghosted his temple before running through his hair, "Just Hiccup," she gave a teasing grin, "my boyfriend who is part cat."
"That's temporarily part cat to you!" He protested with a small laugh, "And don't forget it. All this," he gestured to himself, "It's not going to last much longer, you know."
She raised her brows, suppressing a smile, "Are you sure about that?"
"Yes. No," he groaned, "I don't know! I certainly hope this isn't permanent. Can you imagine at the Gathering of Chieftains? Oh look, is that Stoick's boy? What happened to him? He's gone wild, that one!" He shook his head, "No, this has to be temporary. I refuse to acknowledge otherwise."
They fell into a conversation about their days after that. Astrid detailing how training the younger generation of Berk was going, Hiccup talking about setting a disagreement between Mildew and Sven, among other things.
As they talked, they ended up lying together on the blanket, wrapped up in each other's arms. Falling into a comfortable silence, Astrid's fingers played with the wild locks of Hiccup's hair, and he gave a small sigh of contentment.
He loved these moments with her, where it was just them, and no one else.
Astrid had her forehead pressed against Hiccup's, her blue eyes on him. His eyes were closed and his face looked peaceful, the stress of being Chief nearly erased from his features. Her fingers moved higher on the back of his head near the cat ears, still playing with his hair.
The sound was so soft at first that she didn't realize where it was coming from. It almost sounded like the noise Toothless made when the spot under his chin was scratched.
Her eyes widened in a mix of delight and amusement when she realized it was Hiccup. He was purring.
It seemed the magic made him a little more like a cat than they both realized. In her own shock, she outwardly voiced her suspicion. Hiccup's eyes popped open, his ears forward and his tail stiffening as he quickly extricated himself from her embrace and stood up, "No! No, you--you didn't hear that!"
She gasped, "Wait! You knew you could do that?"
Averting his gaze, he rubbed the back of his neck, his other hand on his hip, "N-not exactly. I suspected..." It was no use. Shoulders deflating, he explained, "Three days ago. You were asleep at the time, and...it just happened! I, I don't think I can control it..."
His eyes met hers, "You, you won't tell anyone about this, will you?"
She snorted, "Of course not! The twins would have a field day trying to get you to purr, you'd be miserable. No, this stays between us. Now get back here!" She motioned for him to join her again, "We don't have to return to Berk until sunset. And in case you forgot, purring means you're happy, so I see it as a great thing."
Sighing in relief, he thanked her and settled back in with her. "Well...yeah, that's true. You make me happy. And you, Astrid, you are really something, you know that?" Kissing her cheek, he added, "I wouldn't have it any other way."
