(Welp, I found the perfect explanation of Lord Darkrai’s basement. Just imagine all of the appliances are like failed and half formed fusions of various pokemon that he just keeps down there.)
I enjoy giving people hope. It makes it all the sweeter when I strip it away.
Lord Darkrai
There is a big difference between you and I. While you love to kill without purpose, I torture and force to live because I refuse to let any mortal being find any semblance of peace. To deliver them to eternal sleep is a kindness I could never give them willingly. Besides, it is far more fun to watch someone writhe in agony, the pain you dealt affecting every fiber of their being while your continued happy existence plagues and mocks them. There is truly no greater pleasure on this earth.
Lord Darkrai
Late Night Drink
"How much longer am I to remain idle?" The darkrai muttered as he rubbed his forehead with his left claw. The wooden bar that his elbows rested on was covered in what looked like a mixture of blood and alcohol. Strangely enough he wasn't the reason it was there. The humans that were partying in the building had gotten into a brawl which drew the dark pokemon close. It had been a long time since he had found his way into one of these facilities, it was somewhat nostalgic in a way. But nostalgia led to remembering previous things. As he thought more about the events of the past the more of a headache he got. He felt confused and befuddled as he tried to sift through his memories only to find holes and gaps in them.
With a frustrated growl his free arm shot out and grabbed the quaking bar tender who had barely desired to move since everyone knocked themselves out and the strange creature sat at his bar. "Get me something strong." The lord snarled, his lips curling as he altered his speech to what the human could understand.
Quivering the bartender nodded and rushed off as soon as he felt the grip on his neck loosen, leaving Lord Darkrai alone with his mental puzzle. He was missing something but he couldn't get what it was. Which was even more infuriating because he knew that whatever it was was holding him back from his next plot. It was almost as if part of his mental capacity was being taken up by something without his consent and if there was one thing he disliked it was something using his mind without his knowledge.
Suddenly the human came back shaking as he held a massive glass filled with a deep red liquid. As the man set it down the lords eyes opened and glanced at it. His chest rumbled in disgust, it was missing something. His piercing gaze then focused on the bartender who let out a shudder. With a snap of the darkrais fingers the human felt himself almost floating before a sudden plummet into darkness.
LD extracted the light blue shimmery dream from the humans skull before he even hit the floor, the essence of the dream flowing into the glass and mixing with the red liquid to become a sparkly purple.
Taking up the glass he swirled it around a moment before tasting it. The sweet and yet bitter flavor made him cringe for a moment before he set it back down with a clearing of his throat. "I need to clear my head..."
Trust me, I know what self loathing is, but to kill myself? That would put a damper on things. Not at all productive. Besides I've become increasingly doubtful as to whether or not I CAN die at all.

The Closing
"Finally, this aweful year is coming to a close." The dark pokemon sighed as he watched the humans in their crowded little city cheer as festivities concluded. Half drunk on themselves they wander through the night, being foolish and hoping to stay up the rest of the night, hoping beyond reason to keep the party going for as long as possible. Wishing that the holidays and the... 'time of light,' would never end. But it must. As with all things, they cannot prolong the inevitable crushing realization of what is to come. Another year, just like the last. Nothing has changed as another day dawns. Everyone is just in pain, but this time they have nothing to look forward too through the pain... so it will last. Then it will build.
The darkrai could practically hear the arguing and the complaining that would follow in the coming days. Pokemon would take some time still to get back in the groove as the human festivities lighten their spirits, so for now it was humans. Humans who had thrown everything away to bask in the brief light while it lasted.
The lords arms were folded as he looked out on the town, on the out skirts he could see the vultures already wanting to move in. The ghosts who were restless and craved revenge, the parasites that fed off of the left over drunken energy. The scavengers who could feast for a while longer off of the scraps left behind.
Of course they didn't dare move yet. Not till the city slept and not until the powerful presence had moved away. They could sense something there, something that held them back and of course the lord new he was the cause. Things that fed on such energy were naturally weaker to him, especially around this time. Their desperate need only served to grow the darkness that resided in their souls. Sometimes he would let them prey on the weaker ones first but not this time. He was starving, and his growing hatred and anger only increased its severity. This time he was truly going to feast.
Long Night
The lord sighs as he sits back on the bench, the human next to him cringing and whimpering from the nightmare cast from the dark pokemons mere presence. Most were in their homes nestled by their warm fires this night enjoying the joy the day brought.
It made him sick...
"One more to go before this horrid year concludes." He muttered causing his nearby victim to shiver even harder, the cold from the snow fall not helping in the slightest either. At least new years was a bit more forgiving. Everyone hopeful about the new year ahead only to have those dreams stripped away as they gorge themselves on alcohol and begin to cry through the sorrow of their wasted lives while the children moan and complain about not being old enough.
It was rare for him to spend so much time near humans unless he was hunting for something specific to satiate his desires but most pokemon around this time were far better off than humans and produced less strain. Of course the negative emotions were so low around now so he basically had to feed off of the tiny scarps he could find in the first place.
Next to him the man had grown pale and his squirms were becoming weaker and weaker as the nightmarish pokemon thought about what to do in the next few gruelingly slow days till he could feast once more and all the horrific events that had been forgotten by the appointedly magical days came flooding back and crashed down upon the tired spirits of all who partook in such events.
He was pulled back from his bitter stirrings by a sudden cry and he waved a hand in surprised the man next to him suddenly going limp as his eyes weakly opened before the darkrai siphoned the dream right out of his head. The sensation being a mixture of tugging pain and light headedness before he passed out once more.
The slightly tinted nightmare shifted in the lords palm, tiny sparkles visible as it glistened off the falling snow. It was smaller than he had anticipated, which means he would have to do this whole process again tonight. It had been a long time since he had feasted on dreams for nourishment as the realization of certain things made them seem a bit superfluous, but they were all he had right now so they would have to do.
As he finished the tiny dream he grumbled bitterly before slipping into the ground, on the prowl for more.
