Folks have a hard time believing that these delicate animals are denizens of the Chesapeake Bay and Lynnhaven River and not creatures from some faraway tropical paradise. This plump fellow was in a baby oyster cage that was hanging from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation dock at Pleasure House Point.

Laurie Sorabella Oyster Scientist of LRNow fame explains:

That's a cube that I've deployed to test whether oysters survive in that canal. The holes on the mesh are way too small to catch or drown a terrapin.

Guided Bird Walks at Pleasure House Point Three Opportunities: June 13, July 4, or August 1

Rain Barrel workshop by LRNow at Brock Environmental Center July 11th.

Rain Barrel Workshop July 11, 2015, 11:00-12:30, Brock Environmental Center

Join us at the Brock Environmental Center on Saturday, July 11th, to learn more about why a rain barrel can

Ivy -- 50 gallonsbe perfect for your yard or garden.  They can be installed on your home or garage with or without gutters.  We will explain how to calculate the runoff from your roof and how much water you can expect.  You will also learn how to install and maintain your barrel or system of barrels.

All workshop attendees will receive a 20% discount on the barrel of your choice.   Get the Ivy, 50 gallon barrel, in green or black for $76 (normally $95).  Or the Moby, 65 gallon barrel, for $140 (normally $175).  Or receive a 20% discount on our 150 gallon cistern, $260 (normally $325).

Moby -- 65 gallonsan additional cost of $35 and professional installation through Mike's Rain Barrels can be arranged for any of size system.

Without the hard work of Lynnhaven River NOW, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, their vital volunteers and the preservation of Pleasure House Point - Virginia & Virginia Beach wouldn’t be able to promote The Oyster Life to potential visitors.

Hopefully their visiting the Lynnhaven River, Pleasure House Point and the Brock Environmental Center will inspire them to take care of their own waterways and open space at home!

This is a Linaria Candensis or Blue Toadflax. Thanks to Trista of Lynnhaven River NOW, & Mary Reid Barrow of the Virginian-Pilot in helping to identify it this foggy morning! You can find a bunch of them on trail on east side where it splits Pleasure House Creek & dogleg channel almost in sight of Brock.

No "photoshopping" necessary today. It would be a beautiful day on the Lynnhaven, except it looks like everyone's doing their spring fertilizing.... unfortunately, it's washing off your lawn and into the stormdrains and the river which = excess nitrogen = algal bloom, which could leave to eutrophication and fish kills! Is super-green grass really so critical?
