Do you ever think that when Scout first began to walk, he was excited. Do you think he got Scout’s ma and was like, “mon cœur, look at our little explorer.”

Do you think he knew immediately that Scout was his son, before he even found the documents in Medic’s office, listing the last name and relatives. Do you think looking into his eyes, he was surprised to see his own staring back at him, the same shade of Blue.

Do you think he lies awake at night, wondering if leaving was the right choice, if they were really any safer than if he stayed. Either way, Scout ended up in this line of work, in the literal crossfire. Do you think he thinks about it. Do you think the usually so self assured and self aggrandizing asshole ever wonders if he was wrong.

Engiespy makes me genuinely feel so goddamn nauseous. Like, most the popular dynamics in this fandom are based on at least somewhat gameplay, and there’s an element of that to Engiespy with Spy countering Engineer in game, but also the two characters are genuine foils in personality imo.

Spy is a character who lives in a sort of faux opulence. He pretends he is an elite and sophisticated and above the common man, but for all his accomplishments he has absolutely nothing to show for it. He has no connections, no family, no real friends. His life is a gilded cage, made from the selfish fear of getting close to people but also his own ego. He couldn’t even tell Scout he was proud of him, and you could make nice excuses for that, but imo its just another example of his cowardice and this inability to shatter the “elite” persona. Because “sophisticated” people don’t have bastard sons.

Meanwhile Engineer is such an earnest character. He is blunt and to the point, and often a lot more open than the other mercs. He is characterized as almost kinder too, or at least understanding. He has this level of truthfulness and trust about him though that Spy never has, this level of humanness that Spy can’t.

When the two of them retire, Engineer will have people to go back to. He will have friends. Spy will have nothing but his cage. And they are both getting up there.
