Prompt #1284
“They will tell you they love you,” the witch said to her apprentice as she watched her cauldron. “They will treat you just as they treat your kin. But if you show them a single ounce of what you are capable of, they will call you a threat and hunt you like an animal.”
The apprentice’s face burned as their pestle stilled within the mortar. “And what of magicians, then?”
“They think it’s all tricks, so we get hunted least, my dear,” the magician said, looking up from their trunk. “Half of my show are things non-mages can do. The rest teeter on the line of plausible deniability. Moving around keeps us from getting tracked.”
“Have you found what you needed yet, or are you going to keep eavesdropping, magician?” the witch asked.
“Ah, I've just about found it.” Their arms went impossibly deep into the trunk. “While I'm in here, is there anything you or your apprentice need?”
“What could either of us possibly need?”
The magician grinned widely. “A trinket or charm, perhaps? Something to keep the magic from bubbling out at inopportune times?”
“Do not encourage my apprentice to dance with fire, Magician.”
“That is not what I am doing, Witch,” they replied. Their shoulder, too, had disappeared into the trunk with nearly a quarter of their torso. “I am simply going to give them something that will make them less threatening. No trade required.”
The apprentice looked up from their work. “You’re terrible at business.”
“Yes. That is why I am a magician and not a witch.”
Prompt #1233
“I may not have been there when magic was created,” the mage said, spellbook aloft and glowing. “But I dwelled in the archives of its construction too long for you to doubt me.”
Prompt #1293
They had read that pain was meant to sharpen their senses, to force them into some kind of heightened state of awareness. But all it did was narrow their awareness to the source of the pain.
The sharp pulses made their incantations end abruptly, and each throb unraveled a different spell from their carefully plotted lair. They could barely remember which enchantments were slowly being pulled apart.
Prompt #1292
There was a twitch and tremble beneath their skin as though the magic their body contained was desperate to escape, regardless of whether flesh was in the way of its exodus.
