Well... I was taught by my father, from when I was young. When I was first learning, it was mostly about structure, control, and focus. You likely are having the same issue.
John knocks on Maris's door. He had asked for a few minutes. It had been several hours. He just needed to be sure he was ready. He's still not sure, but it's been long enough that he'll chicken out if he doesn't tell her now.
"Maris? Can we talk, sweetheart?" he calls through the door.

Maris opens the door slightly, glancing over him for a minute, and making a somewhat nervous clicking noise before opening it to allow him inside.
"I cleaned it like you asked a few days ago." She said, as though she was trying to break the ice with something neutral. But it's Maris and socializing is still a bit rough for her.
