New features announced for Office 365 for 2019/20
New features announced for Office 365 for 2019/20.
Transcribe audio files or record your own while staying in the flow in Word
We spoke with researchers, reporters, lawyers, and teachers, and learned that people spend a ton of time recording audio interviews on their phone, and then spend even more time transcribing those conversations into Word. Today, we’re announcing a solution that helps busy professionals upload their own audio files or record new ones on the fly, all within Word. Once your audio has been uploaded or recorded, Word—leveraging your OneDrive account to securely store the audio files and Azure Speech Services under the hood—displays a written audio transcription in the side panel and allows you to quickly and easily bring relevant snippets or the entire transcript into your document to edit. The transcript itself is automatically separated by speaker and into relevant chunks of content, and the interactive panel allows you to easily jump around the recording to find and verify the perfect quote. Audio transcription in Word will be available in early 2020 in Word for the web, with integration into the Word desktop and mobile apps following in the spring. Exact plans and pricing will be announced closer to general availability.
Input data directly into your Excel workbooks with your digital pen
Excel is an extremely powerful tool to do complex data analytics, but that doesn’t mean you need to be sitting at a desk to use it. Today, people fill out checklists, research reports, and more using paper and a clipboard and then must type those results into their computer later. Or they fumble to balance a computer to type while walking around. To address these issues, we’re elevating what your digital pen can do in Excel so Firstline Workers, busy professionals, students, and researchers can easily write, edit, or delete values using only their digital pen and tablet. Now it will be easier than ever to be productive and stay connected for workers who aren’t always able to find a desk to work. Data entry using a digital pen will be available in Excel for the web and desktop in spring 2020 for Office 365 subscribers.
Create and reply to comments from anywhere using pen or voice
With Ink Editor we’ve made it so that editing your documents is easier and more natural than ever, and now we’re extending those intelligent capabilities and the expressiveness of digital ink into the realm of commenting as well. On devices with a touch interface and/or supported microphone, people will be able to create expressive ink comments directly from within the comment pane, or use dictation to provide feedback. Together, and combined with existing Ink Editor capabilities, anyone reviewing a document can now complete that task end-to-end using just their tablet, digital pen, and voice. Expressive ink comments and easy entry to dictation in comments will be available starting with Word desktop in Spring 2020 for Office 365 subscribers.
Office + Surface are better together
Today at the Surface event, we showcased several new enhancements to Office that leverage the unique capabilities of Surface’s latest hardware advancements. The new Studio Mics in the Surface Pro 7 offer best-in-class audio-capture with no additional hardware, which makes Office features such as dictation and transcription work at their best. When using your Surface Earbuds together with PowerPoint, you get the benefit of incredible microphones to hear you clearly even as you walk around, allowing Live Captions and Subtitles and Presenter Coach in PowerPoint for the web to operate with better accuracy. The intuitive gestures can be used to navigate Slide Show and start/stop video without having to buy a separate clicker. You can even have just one in your ear for the best mic capture while keeping the other invisibly hidden in your hand to navigate slides. Surface Earbud gesture support will be available in November, alongside the general availability of the Earbuds, in PowerPoint desktop for Office 365 subscribers. The ultra-portability of the Surface Pro X allows you to be productive on the go, whether that’s using Excel to enter data or Word to review documents. The Pro X offers a revolutionary new storage mechanism for your pen so you’ll always have it handy when you need it. Office leverages the fact that the Pro X knows when the pen is removed from its storage to automatically bring your inking tools front and center. In addition, Office will now showcase everything you can do with your Surface accessories within each app, whether that’s the Surface Pen, Earbuds, or the Dial. If there are new capabilities available in an Office app you’re using, they will be displayed, so you always know you’re getting the best out of your Office + Surface combination. Support for reacting to the Surface Pen being removed from its storage location is available now in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for Office 365 subscribers. Surface tips in Office will first be available in November in PowerPoint desktop for Office 365 subscribers.
Listening to customers to improve the ink in PowerPoint experience
We recently announced a set of improvements to Office, including several additions to the overall inking experience in PowerPoint based directly on what we’ve heard from customers. This includes support for replaying pre-drawn ink in Slide Show, myriad improvements sourced primarily from educators who ink in Slide Show on Windows and Mac to teach their classes, and the beginning of bringing ink to Office for the Web, starting in PowerPoint Slide Show. We’re happy to announce that all these capabilities are now rolling out to everyone.

Chat & Collaboration
Teams helps you stay on track with focus time “Where focus goes, energy flows” – Wayne Dyer, American author. Busy people can sometimes fill their days with meetings and appointments and forget to schedule time to focus on their work without any outside distractions. MyAnalytics helps you explore your own work patterns and learn ways to work smarter – including AI powered suggestions for setting aside “focus time” on your calendar (i.e. when it notices your week is filling up with meetings). When you schedule “focus time” through MyAnalytics, Teams will automatically help you stay focused by: changing your presence to “focusing” and silencing all notifications during the focus period (based on your priority access settings).
Calling & Meetings
Participate in whiteboarding from afar with Microsoft Teams Rooms – Content Cameras and Intelligent Capture Even with amazing technology at our fingertips, the traditional whiteboard still has an important role in many meeting rooms and can serve as a great collaboration tool. And while Teams provides a wonderful meeting experience for those who can’t be in the room– it can still be difficult for those people to see what’s going on and participate in whiteboarding sessions. The Microsoft Teams Room app has been updated to include a “content camera” feature—this technology will detect the whiteboard in the room, crop and frame it, and share the content with remote participants. And even when a person steps in front of the whiteboard, the viewers will be able to see right through them to what is on the board! Meetings First brings Microsoft Teams meetings to Skype for Business Server customers Designed for Skype for Business Server customers who want the innovative meetings experience available today in Teams, Meetings First is a configuration mode that allows organizations to continue to use Skype for Business Server for their chat and enterprise voice needs, but move their meetings workload to the cloud. Meetings First was designed for organizations who require the enterprise voice workloads of Skype for Business Server but want a superior meetings experience with Microsoft Teams. Any version of Skype for Business Server is supported, though more recent clients will have a better coexistence experience. In addition, organizations need to be licensed for Teams, including Audio Conferencing if PSTN dial-in/dial-out functionality is required. Houston, we have sound! You asked and we listened. Now, you can share your audio during a Teams meeting, so all participants, near and far, can hear whatever media you're presenting. So go ahead, add that video to your PowerPoint presentation. Your audience awaits! Partner Provided Calling Plans for Japan SoftBank has released their UniTalk calling plans to Office 365 customers in Japan. The Softbank Calling Plans enables SoftBank to sell and support PSTN calling services specifically for the Japanese market. Audio Conferencing via Direct Routing for GCC High and GCC DoD This feature enables participants to join your organization’s meetings using a standard phone number. Configuring this feature requires your GCC High or GCC DoD organization to use its own numbers for dial-in access and all meeting dial-outs to phones are via Direct Routing. To enable the service, organizations need to set up Direct Routing and configure phone numbers that can be used for dial-in access.
Developer
Personal apps in Microsoft Teams on mobile devices (developer preview) Personal apps are an important part of how you can extend and customize Microsoft Teams for your organization. It provides a capability for people in your organization to use 3rd party apps within Teams. We are pleased to announce that we are bringing personal app support to the Teams app on mobile devices. We have rolled out personal apps in developer preview mode for all developers to view their app experience running inside Teams mobile. We are targeting a broader roll-out of personal apps for end users on mobile devices in last quarter of this calendar year 2019.
Teams for Education
Enhanced Assignments tab in Teams for Education The enhanced Assignments tab now shows a clear view of what’s coming up next. Think of it as a “to do” list. If you’re a teacher, this means work you have left to review or grade. For students, that means approaching due dates. When creating a class assignment, educators can add resources from your Staff or PLC team. Simply select Add resources on your assignment and choose it from the file picker. You no longer need to move your content between teams.
When scheduling an assignment and setting the due date, you can also specify when you want to close turn-ins, too. No submissions will be allowed after the close date, granting more flexibility on if/when late or revised work will be accepted.

Microsoft Whiteboard for education gets new six features to enhance inclusion and collaboration
Microsoft Whiteboard for education gets new six features to enhance inclusion and collaboration. Reactions give students and teachers the ability to quickly “thumbs-up” stickies, images, and text on the Whiteboard from their Windows 10 or iOS device. They provide a low-stakes way for students to express opinions and participate, and they’re also great for taking quick votes and promoting peer feedback. Send to Teams encourages students and teachers to continue the conversation beyond the class period by allowing individual users to share boards they’ve created to a channel within Microsoft Teams. Sharing a board keeps it viewable and open to collaboration, providing students with a touchpoint for reviewing, catching up on missed discussions, and continuing to iterate and expand on the lesson. Emerging literacy, learning a second language, and learning differences like dyslexia or ADHD can sometimes present challenges in following what’s being written on a classroom whiteboard – physical or digital. That’s why we’re bringing Immersive Reader into Microsoft Whiteboard. Immersive Reader provides a set of tools like focus mode, parts of speech identification, and a Picture Dictionary to help students better decode text on the whiteboard – and ultimately improve their reading comprehension in general. Sometimes it can be tough to know where to focus on an infinite canvas – and that’s especially true for students with low vision. Follow-along (preview) helps direct students’ view by automatically following and zooming in on one user’s contributions to the board. For example, a student with low vision could use follow-along to keep the Whiteboard zoomed to wherever their teacher is working on the board, and thus stay focused on the most relevant content. At other times, the barrier to students focusing is, well - other students! As great as interactive lessons on a shared whiteboard can be for student engagement, sometimes students will choose to engage in inappropriate ways, and that can take the lesson off-course. Read-only mode helps reduce this problem by allowing teachers to “mute” particular individuals, reducing distraction without embarrassing the student or interrupting the flow of a lesson. Finally, to celebrate the partnership between NASA and the Education Workshop team, we've added two space-themed EDU sticker packs. Add fun and far-out friendship with Classroom Pets in Space or visualize the universe in class with our new Orbiting Planets sticker pack collections. Best of all, these new packs and all the Whiteboard stickers will soon be available on both iOS and Windows 10! Read the full article
Whiteboard in Teams meetings integration, ink grab and more
Whiteboard in Teams meetings integration, ink grab and more. Microsoft Whiteboard continues to evolve rapidly. This month we are introducing Whiteboard integration into Teams meetings and two intelligent inking features. Whether you choose to participate from the meeting room or remotely, Microsoft Whiteboard in Teams Meetings (commercial preview) empowers meeting attendees from the same tenant to participate in the conversation, regardless of the device used. For quick and easy collaboration, the board is automatically shared with all meeting attendees. To enable Whiteboard in a Teams meeting, please turn on the Whiteboard web preview. Ink grab, enables you to take a picture of your notes scribbled on a physical whiteboard and convert them into digital ink on the Whiteboard App. You don’t have to recreate your board from scratch and all of the information is captured. If you start an ad-hoc brainstorm session on the physical whiteboard, you can easily continue on the digital whiteboard and include remote collaborators in the conversation. Simply take a picture of the content and use ink grab to transform them into digital ink. Bad handwriting? Don’t worry! Ink beautification increases the readability of quickly-jotted notes in the Whiteboard canvas, which analyzes handwriting and automatically replaces it with more legible strokes. This feature increases collaboration, learning and ideation by addressing common reasons users tell us they find it difficult to use pen or ink. Together, these intelligent inking features reduce the friction associated with collaboration. With the magic wand, your collaborators will be able to easily collaborate with you on your inking creations. Ink grab and ink beautification are available in Win10 app, and ink beautification will roll out in the next iOS app update. Read the full article
