It’s summer in Tyria, and even if Saga is kinda an icebrood now, that doesn’t mean she shouldn’t enjoy the gentle sun or the joy of the sea! With @mindlessabnormity‘s Julianna Fyre, @mistbeing‘s Penelope and @bonethot‘s Barbie we had such a great day at the beach of Labyrinthine Cliffs!

drabble ask thingy. ZIP ME. (zomororoorororo's scarf, yeah?? :^Dc)

Zip Me - a drabble about one character dressing another, or the other way around.

As I’m sure you’re absolutely, completely, incontrovertibly surprised to hear, I spun this into a Zommordim (Zommoros/Qadim) prompt :^)

One canon divergent detail to note for this story: Zommoros remembered to use his magic to prevent Qadim from falling into the Mythwright Cauldron at the end of Mythwright Gambit.

Even when he was on the brink of ruinous debt, Zommoros still smiled.

It was a smile that wasn’t disingenuous or forced but instead heartfelt and full. At times it bore touches of anxiety, but nevertheless it was a smile that shone in his eyes and revealed his enjoyment of the games he and Qadim played, in spite of it all. 

It was a smile that was undeniably on his lips as well, but Zommoros chose to keep it hidden behind the scarf he wore. Keeping one’s mouth covered was an idiosyncrasy of djinn that Qadim himself had long since stopped bothering with. It wasn’t the first thing that made him an outsider in djinn society, and he doubted it would be the last.

Zommoros was an outsider too, but Qadim could see he still clung to the belief that one day he would be allowed to return to Ahdashim. Even now, Zommoros talked about his exile as if he were merely on an extended, voluntary vacation. Even now, he wound his scarf around his lips, as if looking the part of respectable djinn society would eventually gain him access to it once again. Qadim knew better.

When Qadim saw Zommoros again, many years since they had shared each Elonian evening over wine and carrom, Zommoros wore a different scarf. This one had patterns that resembled the way sunlight played across clear water, and it pooled at Zommoros’s neck and around his shoulders. It suited him well. 

Qadim told him as much. But this, like his other expressions of desire - that he still found Zommoros impressive, despite his incurable foolhardiness; that he wanted Zommoros for his own - was now treated with a look of startled longing from Zommoros before being overtaken by a quirk or a furrow of his brow, as if betting on Qadim’s sincerity was one wager Zommoros could not quite bring himself to make.

Of course, Zommoros had also convinced himself that Qadim alone was responsible for him being persona non grata in Elona. Ever the denier of responsibility was Zommoros, ever the master craftsman of half-truths. 

Misunderstandings, debts, time, ideologies–the separations between Zommoros and him had become numerous. But inevitably the time came when the points were proven and the scores were settled, and he and Zommoros came to lounge in an undisturbed corner of Zommoros’s realm, talking idly and finishing a vintage bottle of Sebelkeh Dry that Zommoros had picked for this occasion.

For every sip of wine, Zommoros tugged his scarf from his lips; and for every time he set his wine glass aside, he arranged his scarf so his mouth was hidden once more. Qadim watched this ridiculous habit play out for a time, but finally he reached out and curled his fingers around where the scarf rose to Zommoros’s cheek and gave it a tug.

“–and quite frankly it was an extraordinary influx of mithril ingots coming into the Forge,” Zommoros was saying, glancing down at the familiar gesture. “…So much that I finally had to speak to Miyani about it.”

Zommoros’s words had become a little quicker, a little softer. One of his hands followed Qadim’s lead, gradually coming up to curl into his scarf underneath his chin. 

“She told me that a local of apparently questionable constitution and character got the idea that he could overwhelm the physical space of the Forge if he put enough things in it.” 

Qadim snorted then. “Ridiculous.” 

“Yes, but it hasn’t stopped him from trying,” said Zommoros with amused exasperation, and then his hand joined Qadim’s in tugging his scarf to his chin. 

For a moment, he and Qadim simply looked at one another. Then Zommoros’s smile spread across his face, tentative and hopeful and fond, and then he was pulling Qadim toward him, and then Qadim was trying to get the rest of Zommoros’s scarf to cooperate in coming off, but Zommoros always piled his scarf on his neck and shoulders in such a way that there was no easy end to find and tug on–

Eventually - at last - the scarf began to come loose. Qadim unwound it from Zommoros’s shoulders as Zommoros kissed his cheek, and with it unraveled the years and distance that had separated djinn from djinn.
