a little drabble from Mistwind because @lucecarlyledraws has inspired me with all her amazing drawings! I love her so so much. This little fic features all her fave girls in it. It might be canon one day. We’ll see.

Niralin was inspecting the outreaches of the camp with Taiath when they noticed the disturbance. People were murmuring in hushed voices to each other, worried looks on their faces. “What’s going on?” Taiath was the first to ask. Niralin frowned thoughtfully. The camp was too quiet. Only the children who didn’t know any better were still playing. As she watched, they too paused in their games. One by one they all turned their faces upward, staring at the sky. Niralin followed their line of sight—and swore. “Oh, crap.” She turned back toward the centre of the camp and began to jog.

“Wait, what is it?”

“A falcon,” Niralin told her brother. “Layeran scouts, they use them.” This was not good. She knew Bayr had been hoping that this far into the desert the scouts wouldn’t be able to find them.

Before Niralin can get far, she hears someone shouting. It’s Althaea running towards them from the higher ground, her wild hair flying behind her. There was a wide smile on her face. “Niralin,” she was shouting. “It’s Jordie and Reagan. They’re back!”

Niralin was the first to greet Jordie and Reagan as they walked into camp. Both the girls were covered in sand, their hair and clothes covered with it. Jordie was walking a pace behind Reagan, her shoulders drooping wearily, but the other girl looked more energised than ever. When she saw Niralin, a signature smirk appeared on her face. “This is all you lot could rustle up for a welcome committee? I’m offended.”

Laughing, Niralin strode forward and pulled her friend into a hug that Reagan quickly returned. “This is what happens when you don’t warn us that you’re coming.” Pulling away, Niralin quickly hugged Jordie as well. The girl’s grip was weak and Niralin realised she was exhausted. With the greetings over with, Niralin looked between the two of them questioningly. “We thought you were dead.”

“Sorry we’re late,” Jordie shrugged.

so Edyn doesn't have any memories? (This is for Mistwind btw). How does that work?

ah yes. So Edyn has a sort of recurring memory loss. She could go for months and not lose any memory, and then wake up and she’s completely forgotten the last few days. One thing that sucks is she knows that she could lose all her memories all over again because how much she loses is really inconsistent. When she starts travelling with Lande he ends up giving her a journal to write everything down so she doesn’t have to trust them to fill in the blanks.

So it’s not a guarantee that she’ll forget everything, but it’s also not a guarantee that she will remember everything either, which is frustrating for her so she tries to write down every detail she can.

so what's Mistwind about really?

so the series as a whole is about a conflict between two countries: Layera and Araynn. Historically speaking, they go way back. A little bit of backstory here is that the two countries were both allies once. Long story cut short, something happened and each country blamed the other for it. Years and years later (I'm talking centuries), Layera decides to invade Araynn. This is despite the fact that Araynn is a peaceful country that dedicates it's time and resources into helping the needy instead of military. They do have a standing army, it's just very small. Araynn had something that Layera needed, and combined with the ill-feelings from the past, they decided: hey? why not invade? (because it's rude maybe? just a thought). Anyhow Layera slaughtered most of the adult population and either enslaved the children or had them shipped off to Layera to be raised there as "good citizens of the empire". Yeah those kids were treated like crap.

But the main part of the story involves a branch of the rebels led by Bayr with Iyla and Niralin backing him up (tentatively named The Sparrows) and their conflict with Elizar. Since book 1 is from the perspective of Ignorant Edyn™ you don't know much about this other than the conflict is personal and could involve a) the dragon b) ryan?? Edyn isn't sure or c) Edyn herself

But yes the story involves a lot of slavery, exploitation, morally grey concept (a lot of the heroes are actually criminals both by Layeran and Araynnian standards) and magic. Also cool things like Land Sirens, actual Sirens and another species that is currently going unnamed because spoilers.It gets pretty dark and angsty but also goofy and happy which basically describes me as a person. Also not sure if I made it clear but it’s medieval fantasy type stuff :))
