Goo and Mud were childhood friends but started growing apart in high school. When Mud went to college, they lost contact. However, when Mud receives a call from Goo’s mom that Goo has gone missing, Mud returns to their hometown.
About Mud specifically: They were immensely quiet as a kid, constantly daydreaming and in their own world. Sometimes they would unintentionally rely on Goo’s more social personality. Their mom was essentially apathetic towards them. Constantly working or out socializing. Mud was left up to their own devices and developed a very independent and responsible personality (breadwinner at 4 years old fr). They lived off the few morsels of attention they’d get from their mom. As such, they grew to expect very little from other people and, despite loneliness, preferred to be alone.
In terms of how they see Goo, I won’t repeat what I said under the Goo post, but they similarly idealized Goo. I would also add that they admired her outgoing nature and looked up to her as someone they wanted to be more like. Similar to Goo’s mom they almost see her as perfect, but throughout the story unlearn this false perception and stop ignoring her flaws and embrace them.
Notes: Forgot to mention it in Goo’s post but both their dads are out of the picture. Not sure if they’re dead or divorced or what. Also, their moms are lowkey toxic old woman yuri.
Goo and Mud were childhood friends but started growing apart in high school. When Mud went to college, they lost contact. However, when Mud receives a call from Goo’s mom that Goo has gone missing, Mud returns to their hometown.
About Goo specifically: She was the type of kid to go up to random people and talk to them—very outspoken and rebellious too (when her mom wasn’t looking). In her mom’s eyes she’s sort of “mommy’s perfect angel”, so she feels the need to live up to her mom’s expectations but she also finds it suffocating and starts to get more and more rebellious over time. As she gets older, her mom and her fight more. Her mom is very overbearing and codependent so she does not take this well which leads to! The Horrors.
In terms of how she sees Mud, she somewhat idealizes them. Mud and Goo have a fundamental misunderstanding because they had completely opposite experiences with their parents and are, in a way, jealous of each other. Like, for Goo, “I wish my mom would disappear” or “I’d rather be neglected than be smothered” vs for Mud, “I’d do anything for my mom to just look at me.” But I think they also want to protect each other from their parents and simultaneously understand each other more than anyone else can because they grew up basically glued to each other.
Notes: The two themes are neglect vs obsession (mother+child relationship) and friend breakups?? Idk a better term for that. Mud and Goo, in universe, aren’t their actual names but I don’t have actual names for them and don’t intend to come up with them LOL.
