“Come on, Doll, it’s not that crazy. I mean you already live here.” Dick said trying to distract himself with Errol who was in a rambunctious mood, being allowed inside for once on account of the rain. Dick had started but hadn’t yet been able to finish his new doghouse thanks too the downpour. 

“I mean you can say no if you don’t want to. I just. . . “ His voice drifted as his face got redder. “Well I want to marry you.”

Tony entered the diner with his books tucked under his arm. Valentina had let him out early, which gave him just enough time to squeeze some studying in before he picked up María. Ever since the near-rumble, he had been even more determined to put his past behind him. He had signed up for a college entrance exam. Although he had kicked the idea around after being released on parole, he hadn’t become serious about it until recently. There was only so much he could do at a pharmacy without a pharmacy degree, and Valentina had made clear to him that she wanted to leave him the store when she retired. Given her faith in him, Tony was determined to get into pharmacy school.

He would be lying if he said that this newfound purpose didn’t also have something to do with María. Even before she had come into his life, he wanted to be better, to be more than what he had been before he went to prison. Now, he was more serious about this than he had ever been about anything else in his life. He found that he was happier than he ever remembered being either. He and María had been dating for months now, officially, now that he had managed to convince her brother that he wasn’t a Jet and had nothing to do with them anymore. He doubted Bernardo would ever like him, but at least now he wasn’t trying to beat him up.

“Afternoon, Dolores.” he greeted his friend with a smile and wave, setting his books on the counter and settling into a seat. “Busy day?”

He let her lead him almost meekly over to the sink. He could be wild and fiery but more often than not when he came down from whatever had sent him into a rage he was like a kid again, the rage burned out and only left whatever sadness was left over. The anger in that sense was something to be grateful for. 

But maybe the reason it felt like he only had sadness left over was because he had always had to deal with whatever aftermath alone. So having Dolores fuss over him made him nervous. He’d always prided himself on not crying, but now he had a feeling he might not be able to stop himself. “You don’t have to do this for me, you know,” He said quietly.

When he’d been away getting Dolores’ old house sold he’d been terrified he’d miss the birth of their baby. He’d spent too much on calls back home and had rushed back home when the sell had gone through just in case. When he looked back the time between him getting home and Dolores going into labor would get shorter and shorter. It was just under a week. But in memory it was as if it happened as soon as he got home. 

Dick sat with Dolores in the hospital bed one arm around her and the other cradling their baby daughter against his chest. Ruby Charlotte Marie Schiller. He hated crying maybe more than his wife did, but he couldn’t help it looking at the baby, his baby, their baby. “I- Dolores,” He said, his voice cracking as he lifted his head. For some reason looking at her and the expression on her face was what caused him to really start tearing up. “Look what me made.”

Dick was quiet, it was hard to rattle him but he looked shaken. He looked at his wife, very much wanting to hold her but not sure if she would let him. “You were dreaming,” He said quietly. “You started screaming- Christ I’ve never been so cared in my life. Are you sure you’re alright?”

"Sew mostly," She said softly. One couldn't tell from how she was dressed but she had some of the most neatly dressed rag dolls in all of Chamberlain, Maine. All of them tucked in the loose floorboards of her room that she'd lined like little beds. She even had a Nancy Ann Storybook doll with perfect golden curls who was her pride and joy and had been suitable spoiled with an extravagant wardrobe. "Do you um craft?"

As soon as he left, Dick got up and grabbed another beer from the fridge, his face unreadable but he slammed the fridge door shut afterwards. He knew very little about Dolores' stepfather but all few facts he hated. He couldn't even bring himself to speak to the oldd bastard. Though Dolores was right, tthe creep sure loved to hear himself talk.

"Why was he here?" He finally asked trying not to sound angry. He wasn't mad at her. Butt he was mad about having him in his house.
