Vamos a comentar un par de Android TV box que son muy parecidas y que comparten procesador con las ODROID-C2: se trata de la MXQ PRO 4K y la MXQ PRO Plus 4K que me han llegado gracias a banggood.

MXQ PRO 4K y la MXQ PRO Plus 4K

A continuación repasamos sus características técnicas y mi opinión general.

Lista de características:

CPU: Amlogic S905X quad core ARM® Cortex®-A53 a 1.5GHz de 64bits

GPU: ARM Mali™-450MP2 GPU (OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0 /3.0 y OpenCL 1.1)

RAM: 1GB (MXQ PRO 4K) o 2GB (MXQ PRO Plus) LPDDR3 SDRAM dual channel

Almacenamiento:

SD: compatible UHS-1

NAND de 8GB (MXQ PRO 4K) o eMMC 16GB (MXQ PRO Plus)

USB:

4 x USB 2.0

Red:

Ethernet: 10/100

Wi-Fi 2,4GHz sin Bluetooth (MXQ PRO 4K) o 4.0 (MXQ PRO Plus)

Sistemas Operativos:

Android 5.1 Lollipop (MXQ PRO 4K) o Android 7.1.2 (MXQ PRO Plus)

Alimentación: 5V y 2A con la fuente de alimentación incluida de tipo barrel jack igual a otros de Android TV de 2.1mm de diámetro interior y 5.5mm exterior, el estándar IEC 60130-10 Type A.

Precio: unos 29€ (MXQ PRO 4K) o 41€ (MXQ PRO Plus) + impuestos y gastos de envío incluidos

Opinión sobre el hardware:

Ambas placas incluyen el procesador Amlogic S905X que es una actualización del Amlogic S905 que lleva la ODROID-C2, entre las mejoras hay dos muy interesantes:

Crypto Engine – AES/AES-XTS block cipher para claves de 128/192/256 bits, DES/TDES block cipher, built-in hardware True Random Number Generator (TRNG) y motor para CRC y SHA-1/SHA-2/HMAC SHA

Built-in dual-channel audio DAC con amplificador

Los motores de cifrado AES están incluidos de serie en muchos procesadores y es cuestión de activar la licencia o no por parte del fabricante, cosa que no han hecho ni los de ODROID ni los de Raspberry Pi, y luego es imposible hacerlo y además parece que pasan de ello. Sin embargo, algunos fabricantes de otros SoC lo están incluyendo porque mejora mucho los resultados de los benchmarks.

Así que resumiendo tenemos una especie de ODROID-C2 low-cost con un procesador mejorado y con una tarjeta de sonido incluida en el procesador. Incluye además la memoria interna para instalar el sistema operativo, la caja y la fuente de alimentación por un precio muy razonable.

Pero como desventajas tiene que la conexión de red no es gigabit, solo fast ethernet de 100Mbits y los puertos USB son 2.0 y no 3.0. Incluyen ambas Wi-Fi y el modelo superior Bluetooth pero varia mucho el tipo de chip entre fabricantes, así que bajo Android funcionan pero cuando probé con armbian no ha habido suerte en mi caso. Las tarjetas de memoria que usa son las SD normales, las grandes y además sobresalen bastante.

En las siguiente fotos podéis ver la diferencia de tamaño. Si habéis visto la placa base, la caja está medio vacía pero así los puertos quedan más organizados.

Conclusión:

Se trata de una placas muy interesantes, más la MXQ PRO PLUS que la normal, y que ya veremos más adelante se le puede instalar Linux y Kodi sin eliminar el Android de serie con lo que tenemos un triple boot muy interesante. El principal problema es que los fabricantes van cambiando los componentes secundarios y puedes encontrarte con placas en las que bajo Linux puede no funcionar el Wi-Fi o el Ethernet y pierden su brillo. Aunque en general tienes un conjunto muy completo con la placa, memoria interna, la caja y la fuente de alimentación por menos que una Raspberry Pi 3 y en parte con más potencia y memoria RAM.
