Nasal Speech Correction Surgery – Pharyngoplasty with Positive Suction Test This young man was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate deformity. Unilateral cleft lip repair was performed at 3 months and cleft palate repair at 11 months. There had always been a degree of distortion to his speech with relation to certain sounds with an accompanying hypernasality. Of late, he had been facing trouble with his colleagues expressing difficulty comprehending him and his speech therapist referred him to our hospital. He had been diagnosed with velopharyngeal incompetence by his speech therapist. An Orticochea dynamic sphincter pharyngoplasty was performed with creation of a small central port. This would enable normal nasal breathing. A suction test was then performed at the end of the surgery and demonstrated proper action of the soft palate. A positive suction test is indicative of complete correction of velopharyngeal insufficiency. He was referred back to his speech therapist for completion of his rehabilitation process.
