Nuclear War

I can’t believe I’m writing this post. I grew up during the Cold War and let me tell you, Cold War 2 is something to be avoided. Being a Cold War hostage is not good. Not good at all. It’s a constant threat to your life by faceless political machines who value you only as cannon fodder in a nuclear standoff. The machines are protected. You are not. Some people think it will be different in Cold War 2. It won’t. The same political machines who fought the Cold War are still in existence although creaky and degraded with age. If those same machines fight a second Cold War, I doubt we’ll get lucky twice. The machines are senile and desperate because they know their time is short.

So, to get us in the mood for Cold War 2 and possible nuclear annihilation, here are a few links from the Cold War.

The first is the animated film When the Wind Blows (1986). Watching this movie will put you in the mood like nothing else.

This next one, Countdown to Looking Glass (1984), is sort of nostalgic for me. It shows how much better reporting was back in the Cold War. Of course, it only took on that shade later. That style of reporting was normal back then.

Here’s a fun one. Imagine seeing that on TV and not knowing it’s fake. Wait, we may be living it soon if the warmongers get their way.

So now that the mood is set, what, as a Cold War 2 hostage, can we do? Well, almost nothing. The political machines are unstoppable so we just have to look to ourselves and do the best we can. Assuming, of course, we get to live. Here are a few links.

Nuclear War Survival Skills - This one book does more to undermine MAD than any other because it will keep your ass alive if you’re “lucky” enough to be outside a high blast/heat flash zone. All of the stuff in the book has been tested.

This guy actually built a Kearny Fallout Meter and shows it’s use. A good fallout meter is an essential survival tool. How else will you know when to leave your hole?

NUKEMAP is an excellent nuclear detonation (bomb, missle, whatever) simulator. Wellerstein has been perfecting it for over 10 years. Too bad we didn’t have this when I was little. It would have saved us some anxiety.

And last but boy oh boy not least, a fallout map of the United States by Wellerstein. Probably the most accurate fallout map made. There are others but what’s the point? Every map shows just how fucked we would be if Cold War 2 turned into Hot War 3.

That’s all I have. You can choose to live or choose to die. If you make it past the first strike, take some comfort in there won’t be a second strike. The world will be done at that point and humanity will start over just like after Toba and all the previous genetic narrowing's. Humans are optimized for survival. Just ask Noah.

The initial version was created in February 2012, with major upgrades in July 2013, which enables users to model the explosion of nuclear weapons (contemporary, historical, or of any given arbitrary yield) on virtually any terrain and at virtually any altitude of their choice. A variation of the script, NUKEMAP3D, features rough models of mushroom clouds in 3D, scaled to their appropriate sizes. NUKEMAP3D doesn’t work on most browsers anymore for NPAPI plugins are no longer supported by them.

Some nice and relaxing books.....about nuclear war. As an 80s kid I grew up with a fear of nuclear war. Even today I can't watch Threads all the way through. Totally fascinated by the whole thing though. From logistics to war plans to post war existence.
