It’s hard to pack for 3 months in the Antarctic.
Here’s the current version of after, though: 1 checked bag of clothing and sundries; 1 checked bag of art supplies; 1 carry-on of electronics; and 1 “personal item” that’s actually a big backpack full of clothes and stuff to do on the crazy long flights and layovers in Chile.
I don’t leave until December 31, but this is so complicated and hard that I started early. I’m still going to forget something important. I can’t get boxes at Palmer Station - only flat mail, and even then only when the icebreaker lands about once a month, maybe.
Because people have asked me:
I can’t get FedEx. It’s the Antarctic, so I have to bring what I need or I’m out of luck except for what I can get at the tiny station store and who knows what that will actually end up being.
Amazon does not deliver to Palmer Station. It’s the Antarctic.
I am bringing a swimsuit. There’s a hot tub.
Planes don’t “fly over and drop s(tuff)” at Palmer. Everything arrives via the icebreaker.
EXCITING NEWS (for me anyway):
You can send me mail! Make sure it’s just a flat letter, and send it NOWish if you want me to get it down there. Don’t send food or perishable items. Send it to:
Terri Nelson, Palmer Station c/o Antarctic Support Contract, 7400 S. Tucson Way, Centennial, CO 80112-3938
(It’ll get loaded into a big mail trunk and shipped on the next ice breaker down.)
