thinking about a scene where cap is having Havers Memories and is yknow. sighing and yearning. and pat comes to comfort him and tries at first to make some jokes lighten the mood but its clear that's not working and finally pat is like "you can tell me about him, if you like" and cap does, the floodgates open and he tells him a million little things, how havers was the only one with a faster lap time than him, how he took his tea with just a little bit more milk than his own, one sugar two if they're on maneuvers, and pat's mustache twitches but he doesn't say anything, and he talks about how they used to watch the birds from his office window standing just close enough together for it to feel like static electricity and how havers had a green thumb and could fit in with anyone and how he stood, transfixed, as havers effortlessly swung the young women from the village around the room to whichever song was playing that night and how his heart ached in his chest at the sight and how the gramophone in the ballroom never got any use after he left and how his hair shone bright and warm in the sun as he stepped up to bat for their cricket matches and how he was endlessly polite and had such a charming way with children and he made everything seem easy and oh patrick, how you would have loved him. and pat's taken aback. and he thinks a little too long about it all, about himself and the captain and havers and all the similarities between them all and he thinks and he thinks and the captain prattles on and pat smiles and listens to the way he loves.

Patcapvers where Havers went missing and was presumed K.I.A and Cap mourned but tried to get on with his life and met Pat

but then Havers was found and sent home and they're all in this situation where Cap is feeling guilty and in love with two men and Havers has PTSD but also doesn't want to be unfair about Cap having moved on and Pat is feeling guilty and wanting to do the right thing but also not wanting to give up on Cap

and Robin tells them to try polyamory and the fic is them figuring out how to make it work with Pat and Havers both dating the same man while they learn how to get on with each other.
