There’s something to say, really, about the aesthetics of the 80s (especially in and around queer spaces) and the timeline of the global AIDS crisis that have lent to so many period pieces about this horrific time in queer history. And with the nostalgia for 80’s art, pop culture, and (to a lesser extent) politics so present in consumable culture these days, it feels as though we as a society have firmly placed AIDS and the crisis in a historical role, as opposed to something still playing out now. The frame of mind is very much “it happened then” instead of “it’s still happening”. We have relegated the AIDS crisis to a Period Film.
...At least it’s got a good soundtrack?
