When you feel actual pain in your heart when you decide, in the midst of writing a novel, that a particular character has to bite the dust because that is where the story is headed towards, you know you have done it right. You are killing this character off because the plot calls for it, not just for shock value. You feel the pain because this is the same pain the readers are going to feel when they read your novel.
