I needed to know what an “underground pinball operation” could possibly entail and uhhh turns out that pinball was the subject of a decades-long satanic panic and criminalization up until the 1970’s. It was heavily associated with Chicago organized crime, youth delinquency, and illegal gambling and wasn’t legalized in Kokomo, Indiana until 2016. In 1976 a New York court had pinball wizard Robert Sharpe demonstrate that it was a game of skill rather than chance, and from then on it lost its stigma.
