Today's specialty target is Brett from Archer. If you never saw the show he was a minor character who was used almost entirely for a running gag where he keeps getting shot, usually by accident. Cyril is handed a gun and doesn't know how to handle one? ND and Brett gets hit. Someone shoots at an armored door? Bullet ricochets and Brett gets hit.
Shooting an M1917 out to 700 Yards
Hey guys, here’s this week’s The Armourer’s Bench video. Last week I got to shoot the M1917 out to 700 yards. I’ve never shot open sights that far, it was a challenge but a lot of fun!

Another successful range day!
I brought out the low budget dueling tree with a couple buddies. One guy was such a bad shot he just could not hit a clay at 10 yards. We needed to dedicate a good chunk of time going over the basics with him.
The second guy gave me a good run for my money. Our first run he smoked me breaking all his targets before I could get the first one. The second run he barely won. I didn't realize that you could punch out the center of these clays without breaking the rest of it so I went through almost half a mag before I realized there was a hole and my front sight was just covering it up. Were it not for that I would have won. Third run he fumbled a little at the start which gave me just enough of a lead to beat him but it was close.
As you can see one of the target hangers got hit. I actually expected that and printed a bunch of extras. Out of 5 runs on the dueling tree I broke 3 hangers and ironically that was most of the ones that broke. The guy I was really worried about was too bad a shot to even hit the hangers let alone the clays lol. Anyway next time I think I should make these out of TPU. Soft rubbery plastic might stand up to a few hits and keep on going.
I had my range trip with family today. Neither of them felt much like shooting so we spent most of the day talking. Turned out to be better not bringing the dueling tree because neither of them were good enough to hit a clay pigeon anyway. We didn't even shoot enough to really work on the fundamentals either. But we had fun and that's what mattered.
As we were packing up to leave I found this TPU flapper sitting in my gear bag and remembered I was supposed to test it out. Harder plastics like PLA or PETG will snap and shatter but TPU is soft and rubbery so my hope was something that would hold together for at least an afternoon. The bullet holes didn't shrink down like the self-sealing targets but it didn't really blow out huge chunks either. For less than $1.50 in filament this is way more affordable for me than a steel hostage flapper.
My one concern about this is that it didn't flop around very much when it got hit so after a certain number of hits it'll start getting difficult to figure out whether you hit it or not. I think a little spray paint can fix that. Hopefully it will flake off kinda like a splatter target.
