what happens when one renounces her islamic faith? what are the punishment as stated in the Qur'an?Thanks!

Asalamualaikum, 

Capital Punishment which is to be carried out by an Islamic Jurist under the rule of Islamic Law.

 The Prophet sws said,  "Whoever changes his religion, kill him."

Wait leaving Islam's punishment is death? I realize it is a betrayal but why not just let the person go knowing Allah will deal with them and reveal to them on Judgment Day. I'm a Muslim and I am shocked at this...

 The one who leaves Islam will be asked to repent by the Sharee’ah judge in an Islaamic country; if he does not repent and come back to the true religion, he will be killed as a kaafir and apostate, because of the command of the Prophet sws,

"Whoever changes his religion, kill him."

You turn back upon the truth after you believed. It is better for you, as well as for the entire ummah (as they may get influenced by you) to be killed. Keep in mind, that this can only be carried out under the Islamic Sharee'ah. No one can go around and kill people on their own and take the law in their own hands, it has to be carried out by the proper jurisdiction. Also realize that all of the punishments have many requirements and conditions which don't exactly make them easy to be carried out unless the prerequisites are met, such as 4 male witnesses for an adulterer. Majority of the times, the punishments are there to scare the person from committing the crime rather than punishing them. Take Saudi Arabia for example, everyone knows you will get your hands chopped off for stealing so no one steals and people leave their shops open and unattended all the time with no worry.

I will not deny that there are capital punishments in the Shari'ah and they are there for a valid reason, and if Muhammad sws said so, he didn't do it because he wanted to, he did it on the behalf of Allah awj, ( he is entitled to do so) and henceforth, we take the religion as it is. Sometimes we may not understand the reasons behind it but AllahuAlim and Allah is the Most Wise and All Knowing and we cannot debate this with Him. 

You may be shocked but you can't deny Allah's law.
